When wide-eyed and innocent Sean McGinnis (Michael Cunio) moves to Los Angeles to make it big in the movies, he quickly finds work on the sets of gay pornography films. There he does odd jobs, among them performing as a "fluffer" for a hot porn star called Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney.) A young man still coming to terms with his homosexuality, Sean becomes instantly smitten with Rebel, who is straight and lives with his stripper girlfriend. Even when Sean meets a gay man who shows interest in him, he remains obsessed with the self-absorbed and narcissistic Rebel. As Rebel increasingly abuses drugs and his girlfriend, Sean keeps making excuses for him. But when it becomes evident that the object of his obsession may be involved in a horrific crime, Sean must face reality--and himself.
Though set in the world of pornography, THE FLUFFER is primarily about a gay youth's quest to accept himself. Dealing sensitively with the delicate issues of self-hatred and internalized homophobia, THE FLUFFER is both touching and humorous. Appearances by legendary porn star Ron Jeremy, famed transsexual Chi Chi La Rue, and rocker Debbie Harry add to the fun.

The adult entertainment industry is the focus for a contemporary reworking of the traditional love triangle theme in this dark and occasionally humorous drama. Turning obsession, greed and confused sexuality into a ticking emotional time bomb, The Fluffer interweaves the turbulent lives of an adult movie star, his stripper girlfriend and a cameraman so enamoured with the star that he'll perform the most intimate of on-set functions for him. Though the story unfolds against a gay porn setting which may marginalise the film's appeal, directors Wash West and Richard Glatzer present a story that is of direct and equal relevance to audiences of all sexual persuasions. In fact, anybody who's ever been in love will identify with the characters. However, what will attract the majority of viewers is the film's refreshingly candid vision of the adult entertainment world which even today remains predominantly cloaked in myth and rumour. Much of this is down to West, who is actually a maker of adult movies. That said, anybody expecting cheap titillation will be disappointed because, ultimately, this movie is a tale aimed at the heart, not below the belt.
"...[The film] moves nimbly from behind-the-scenes comedy to melodrama....Along the way there are sneaky flourishes of surreal style....These touches suggest a thoughtfulness that is also evident in the three central performances..."
This film is a very thought-provoking look at the male porn industry, seen through the eyes of a young man who has a crush on one of the stars. The film makes you question your own perceptions of porn, and the sex industry in general. The acting is superb. The film has a very genuine feel to it, enhanced by the presence of some very well-known porn stars, now aged, playing cameo roles as the behind-the-scenes movers in the industry. The film is worth watching alone for Scott Gurney's performance; he is physical perfection- the ultimate porn star. Inside, however, he has been corrupted by the corruption around him. Excellent film
