  • Original Fly is still a cut above the eighties remake!

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Jeff Goldblum gave us a gory rendition of the fly in the late eighties but it failed in my humble opinion to beat the 1958 Vincent Price original. Yes, the original is dated in both acting, and overall style but it still posseses an ability to scare, that seems long lost on todays modern horror movies. Where Goldblum began to slowly dissintergrate into mush. the original gave its scientist the head and hands of a fly and transposed the human appendages to the tiny fly. Just the thought of a fly buzzing round the house with a human head and arm gives me the shivers every time. The finale is just the best horror movie ending ever! A must watch old classic!

A very stagey version of the insectoid tale, starring the great US TV character actor David Hedison and Vincent Price. Kurt Neumann's direction is workman-like and uninspiring. Support from Patricia Owens as the scientist's seemingly neurotic wife is all glamour and no substance (she is rarely out of her ball gowns) and the disguising of the mutated scientist's half-man half fly is unbelievable. A decent director would have used the opportunity to use lighting and camera angles to create some kind of tension, revealing the horror at an opportune time. Not Neumann. A blanket will do. And the emergence of Hedison's finally mutated fly as a captive inthe web is one of the most hilariously memorable moments in 1950s science fiction. Watch it and then watch Cronenberg's version - that is true body horror with a slice of humour, and many times better than this rather damp squid of a movie.

One of those great all time classic films.

A Must watch if you like classic sci-fi films.

Not good on special effects but makes up for

it in the story in my opinion.

Great to look back in time and see how they made great movies before the special effects took over. Nice touch with the cat.......

David Cronenberg is to be given credit for keeping this film alive with his mastery remake. Although the effects now are pretty lame and some of the moralising is a tad boring, there's no getting away from the lump in the throat as we see Andre's experiment goes hideously wrong and his realisation that he must kill himself and his reliance upon his devoted wife to deliver the coup de gras. Of course, the ending will always be remembered...
