An island off the Oregon coast is the setting for this salty yarn of ghosts, lepers, betrayal, vengeance, and teen angst. A fog-enshrouded schooner from 1865 returns from the bottom of the sea to wreak vengeance on the locals of the island, and it's up to local DJ Stevie Wayne (Selma Blair), her charter-boat-captain lover, Nick .. Yet another anaemic horror retread starring a cast of good-looking TV totty Tom Welling from Smallville,... read more on Time Out
A poor movie on the whole, but not as terrible as many reviews have made it out to be. John Carpenters original wasnt a classic itself, and left room for improvement (as well as an interesting story to work with), but this ultimately unnecessary remake does nothing to improve on or add to the original. If you have seen the original film, then there is no reason to watch this largely uninteresting and lifeless remake. There is very little tension, no scares, and no real horror (and any attempt at tension or scares can be easily telegraphed in advance). The special effects are somewhat better than the original, but that is to be expected given the bigger budget and new technology and techniques available. The characters are 1-dimentional, and are not developed enough for the viewer to care about any of them. You dont feel the relationship between Tom Welling and Maggie Graces characters, or any real connection between any of the characters really. Tom Welling does what he can with what little he is given to work with., Maggie Grace and Selma Blair are just going through the motions for alot of the film, DeRay Davis is poor (and you soon begin to hope his character will die), and Tom Welling and Maggie Grace look lost at times and look like they wish that they were making another film! Tom Welling(Smallville), Maggie Grace(Lost & Oliver Beene), and Selma Blair(Hellboy) are all capable actors, but the Fog just doesnt give them anything interesting to work with! The movie takes about an hour to get going and for something interesting to happen, but at that point it is too little too late really (as you have been bored senseless in the first hour)! The remake attempts to give more of an explanation of what is going on and more of a background story than the original did, and it has an interesting (if unexplained) ending, but in the end the movie is just so slow and uninteresting for the most part that it is really not worth watching watch the original Fog movie instead.
Take one classic horror.
Remove all believeable characters.
Remove all memorable set pieces.
Remove claustraphobic atmosphere.
Remove spooky soundtrack.
Hack bits of original story line.
THEN
Assume audience are all idiots
Add American teens from poor TV series
Add done_to_death modern horror cliches
Sprinke some ropey CGI
Half bake in a Hollywood cash_in oven
RESULT
An absolute pile of p o o. Really folks, dont waste your time putting this on your list. Its a bitter disapointment for anyone, whether you've seen the original or not. Rent the original instead, because it leaves this one dead in the water. (Geddit?)
Why, oh why, would anybody want to watch this film? It is absolutely terrible. It isn't even scary, and just bores you throughout. Don't even think about watching it - even if you have two hours to burn. A definite no-no.
This film is sexist drivel with the usual horror film camera angles scanning up and down bodies of women wearing underwear/bikinis etc while the men remain clothed or even wear big coats! Not in the slightest bit scary, terrible acting, not even bad enough to be interesting or funny. Save yourself a valuable couple of hours and your life and don't bother!

Storyline goes big cloud (like a big smelly fart) follows that girl from lost and some other people around - they are scared and they draw pictures of scales (like you use to make buns) everywhere, then I (really) fell asleep (was quite tired anyway as had lots of late nites but was the film too).
I remember only one scene from the original and that was at the end and it has stuck in my memory ever since. The new film however will not, its same old, same old teen crap and was just dull.
will I be allocated a new film on monday? Not if recent form anything to go by
is anyone else getting pissed off by this service
Ok, i was not expecting much from this film, but to my surprise was better than most critics have said, ok not exactly scary, not great, bland in parts, but somehow you think i seen a hell of a lot worst. Tom Welling fits in well - but u have a feeling 'wish i was still doing smallville', as in going through the motions, like most of the actors, the problem is being compared to other recent Horror movies, this feels like a 80's Horror movie, falls short of House of Wax, Texas Chainsaw etc. Also if you seen the original you know whats gonna happen at some points, although a slightly different twist. Overall if this film had a more scary eerie atmosphere it probably get 4 stars, so overall should of been so much better. But if you stuck for something to watch, its not too bad, just along as you have a beer and treat the movie as a filler between hours, but just ignore the plot holes! there are worst definately out there i.e White Noise, the haunting. Hostel, ok only kidding with Hostel in parts is kinda believable and god damn scary. I have given it 3 stars because i wanted to give 2.3 stars, and most have given 1 star.
