This is how drama was televised in the 60s. It is a series of recorded plays with some film inserts and it is showing its age. Hugely popular in its day though. I think its worth a look because of that - but I'm not sure many people will want to wade through 26 episodes. The casting is very curious. Kenneth More was much too old for the part. So was Eric Porter but at least he could act. Nyree Dawn Porter in 1960s lip stick just looks completely wrong. Actually I think the charecter of Irene is just impossible anyway - Galsworthy couldn't even write dialogue for her. Only Susan Hampshire (Fleur) seems to catch the spirit of her part. Anyway this was regarded as great telly in its time and proves the point that bad novels make the best films. (By the way - if you do make it through to Part 26 watch out for the Mini driving past - in 1926 - oops!)- Was this review helpful to you?

By temp (13 reviews) from home , 12 Nov 2012Our tastes must have been very different in 1967. I remember the series gave me great pleasure then. I have found watching it again very disappointing. The acting is pure melodrama, to the point of being ludicrous. For a great deal of the time the actors posture in stead of acting. I have got as far as episode 5 and will continue for another couple of episodes. I cannot face any more after that unless it improves drastically- Was this review helpful to you?

Delightful

Forsight
By a customer from Birmingham , 24 Feb 2009In the 1970s, along with most owners of TVs, I watched the adaptation of John Galsworthy's epic portrayal of British social class, seen through the lives of new money; the Forsyth family. I have always remembered this early TV soap and Lovefilm gave me a valued chance to see it again. Look for the fine period detail; the scriptwriters were not afraid to include meticulous period slang, and a good background of historical events; original newsreel footage of the death of Queen Victoria, the General Strike, the slums, debates over child emigration and birth control; Especially now, the detail of bank crashes and financial morality are fascinating; does anything really change? I forgive Kenneth Moore being a monumental bore, and the beautiful Nyeree Dawn Porter for stealing the sympathy from the unfortunate Soames. Eric Porter achieves a triumph as this complex character, aging over 50 years; a man of principle, in love with the wrong woman. Susan Hampshire carries the second half with the difficult task of stealing our sypmathy for selfish, manipulative Fleur, vulnerable, charming Fleur. Nicholas Pennell is fine as her almost too perfect husband, and Caroline Blakinstone is the Chelsea Set New Woman living above her means but refusing to compromise her own idea of honesty.- Was this review helpful to you?

Quality period drama
By a customer from Central Scotland , 10 Jan 2008Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! Just can't praise this series highly enough and glued to the screen watching it. Bleary eyed weekend mornings, as I just HAD to watch all four episodes on each disc. Was too young to appreciate this in 1967 when it first came out, but boy, am I making up for lost time now.
