Terrific comedyBy Philip Concannon from London , 25 May 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]'The Fortune Cookie' is the first pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. The fact that the great Billy Wilder is behind the camera makes this a must-see film.
Sports cameraman Harry Hinkle(Lemmon) is injured during a football match but suffers only minor injuries. However, his brother-in-law Willie(Matthau) is a crooked lawyer who sniffs some easy money. He persuades Harry to feign a serious injury while he sues NBC, the NFL and anyone else he can think of.
Wilder's clever and sly screenplay offers plenty of his trademark dialogue and ingenious situations. The central pairing are, of course, superb. Matthau was tailor made for this role as the fast-talking lawyer and one an Oscar for his efforts. The supporting characters are unfortunately underdeveloped and occasionally stall the film's momentum. But when Wilder lets Lemmon and Matthau take centre stage, the film sparkles like few others.

The Fortune CookieBy laneyb (313 reviews) from Rochester, Kent , 30 Dec 2010I was pleasantly surprised at this movie! I thought perhaps there would be lots of football being shown, but there's hardly any! Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau are just great in this as is the norm for them anyway!
So, if you like these two actors but not football, don't be put off because this is a great comical film!
Riff RaffBy JasmineM (4 reviews) from London , 31 Aug 2008As strong as one would expect from Ken Loach but also a comedy. Remembering those days made it more poignant. The ending dramatic but a bit abrupt. The dialogue was wonderful.
Worth the effortBy Pugeater (182 reviews) from Leicester , 07 Jul 2008The Apartment it ain't. Worth the effort but wouldn't buy it.
Matthau + Lemmon.. we miss you.By a customer from London , 05 May 2008It is virtually impossible to see how this film could be bettered. It is not quite The Apartment but it is still a fantastic study of how generally nice people can let themselves be talked into anything by unscupulous people.
If you haven't seen it, stick it on your list today.
FUN & LAUGHTERBy a customer from Yorkshire England , 03 Oct 2007When you see a film many years ago, and still remember the plot, you are left in no doubt, you have a brilliant film. This film is basically about an insurance scam, which leaves Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau at their very best. I could watch it again, this time I wont leave it for twenty years. The first half of the film left me laughing out loud, very enjoyable; you need all the laughs you can get in life. Simply watch it and enjoy, highly recommended.
