"The Fountain" is an odyssey about one man's eternal struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th-century Spain, where conquistador Tomas (Hugh Jackman) commences his search for the Fountain of Youth, the legendary entity believed to grant immortality. As modern-day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife, Isabel (Rachel Weisz). Travelling through deep space as a 26th-century astronaut, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries that have consumed him for a millennium. The three stories converge into one truth, as the Tomas of all periods - warrior, scientist, and explorer - comes to terms with life, love, death and rebirth.

If you like this director's work, then you have to at least attempt to watch this film. I've not seen his previous works but will give them a whirl on the back of this film (oddly enough) because of the promise/potential.
To understand this film fully you'd probably need a 1st Degree in Literature from Oxford or Cambridge. Either that or a supply of the International Herb, but either way it's going to be a wasted effort because it doesn't merit that much analysis.
On the plus side, Jackman and Weisz (sorry, spelling?) show their talents, and in Jackman's case in particular I can almost feel his pain in one of the scenes. Maybe he was thinking ahead to the critical reviews...
A collection of great films hit the rental market this week, with Babel featuring in the list. Starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, Babel is composed of several strands which intersect at various points and attempt to display the difficulties in communication throughout the world. It was nominated for seven Oscars this year, winning one for the best original score - unlike The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky who previously helmed Pi and Requiem for a Dream. The Fountain is a... Read more
