    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

The Fountain is a story of love, death and spirituality. Spanning over 1000 years and three parallel stories.

Certain aspects of this film are truly remarkable. The premise is remarkable and the acting compelling. Then there are times when stronger direction is needed and the viewer is left feeling a little left out. It is a self absorbing film, the director is clearly following his desires. One you will either love or hate.

  • Another world but the wrong one...

Probably one of the worst films I have ever sat through -- pretentious, badly scripted, badly acted, characters which were no more than cardboard cut-outs. The basic concept of lifetimes taking place simultaneously in different places and centuries is a potentially promising theme and, indeed, an ancient metaphysical truth. Unfortunately, in this film sensationalism triumphs over subtlety -- what a wasted opportunity. There may have once been a great film in embryo (maybe in another world) but the version which was finally released is an empty shell.

  • Tree of Life grows on you.

Very weird sci fi story .Actually 3 parallel stories involving the same characters 500 years apart. Middle story is a tragic love story of Doctor unable to save his wife but first and third stories are about search for the tree of life and after that it just gets very bizarre. A minimum IQ of 200 needed! But the film does have an absolutely outstanding sound track-probably the best soundtrack I have ever heard. Otherwise a good sci fi fantasy that grows on you.

... then you will hate this!

I can see this has a certain marmite quality to it but if you have the time to sit down and let this movie engross you I believe it is well worth it.

A very simple idea conveyed in a beautiful and memorable fashion from a master director again getting the most out of his actors, special effects and story.

    No doubt five stars.

  • Faultless movie, obviously too meaningful for most 'ordinary' people

To dismiss this movie and give it the thumbs down demonstrates a true plebeian nature ... if you aren't moved to tears by the 'hidden' message in this movie then you simply lack the intelligence and sense of feeling to appreciate it. It is to demonstrate YOUR own faults, not those of this movie, which I agree is 'one of a kind', in a very special way indeed.

  • Aronofsky's only bad film

They all let you down in the end. I only watched this film because it was the only one of Aronofsky's I hadn't seen and being a huge fan of everything else I had high hopes. Too high, as it turned out.

The cast should have given it away: Hugh Jackman is as wooden in this as ever (how does he keep getting work?) and charisma killer Rachel Weisz successfully saps any energy from every scene she's in.

The story is a mess of failed metaphors and attempted parallels that, in the end, prove not only flawed but also superfluous and pretentious. The cenral meaning, if there is one, becomes lost in the sentimental fluff.

I really don't know what someone capable of 'Requiem for a Dream' and 'Black Swan' was doing here. Treading water, maybe.
