The Full Monty

In hopes of raising a few quid after their steel factory shuts down, a desperate group of working-class blokes in Sheffield decide to form an exotic male dance troupe, a la Chippendales, with one difference despite their, well, average-at-best physiques, they're going to go the full monty, meaning they'll offer their audience total nudity. Surprisingly bittersweet moments and well-intentioned social commentary imbue this raucous, feel-good comedy from England. When the going gets tough, the tough get go-going, as Robert Carlyle — a divorced father trying to maintain joint custody of his son — forms a strip act along with a group of other unemployed Sheffield steelworkers in director Peter Cattaneo's highly engaging, genuinely poignant and hilarious full-frontal comedy drama. Well endowed with side-splitting laughter, mined by a superb ensemble cast, it's about men's emotional shortcomings as much as their Dirty Dancing techniques, and is jam-packed with many wonderful moments: the Chippendales of the North inadvertently gyrating to the radio in a dole queue is simply inspired.

Clever, enjoyable comedy about salvaging self-respect and baring all, emotionally as well as physically; it struck a chord not only in Britain, but around the world.

    Carlyle quits British cinema

    • 17 Sep 2009

The Full Monty star Robert Carlyle has vowed to venture away from British cinema - because audiences aren't interested in his movies. The actor believes he gave the performances of his life in his last two films, Summer and I Know You Now, but he's fed up they received a muted reaction.
