It isa a great film BUT it is marred by the lack of accurate synchronisation between speech and image. It cannot be right that there is a delay of FIVE+ seconds between the actors moving theit lips and the words spoken with the accompanying subtitles bearing no relation to the actors' beautifully crafted performances. I feel De Sica would turn in his grave if this film were seen by him in this manifestation! As for the Italian, a beautiful language spoken in the film, one can make neither head nor tail of it if these technical mismatches between word and actions are not corrected. It's a real pity that the serious message from the film cannot be understood in this travesty of a performance on our screen. It would get FIVE STARS were it done by Love Film comme il faut.

  • an appalling chapter in history

A quite amazing look at a part of WWII that does not get an airing. The creeping awfulness of the fascist persecution of the Jews in Italy brings to mind the cooking alive of lobsters - small changes can be lived with until the limit is reached with no time to escape. Poignant and oh so heart-rendingly portrayed. I have no idea what people's problems with sound were - it has sub-titles and I certainly didn't notice any major mismatchbetween sound and image.

Out of sync-not really watchable...I wouldn't recommend watching this, I gave it a try and couldn't put up with it anymore!

  • Soundtrack out of synch

This is a film totally spoiled by the soundtrack being out of synch with the images on the screen. This has been commented on before by others, but nothing has been done to cure the problem. What are you waiting for?

  • OUT OF SYNC

The streaming version of this is virtually unwatchable because the sound is so out of sync. You might think this doesn't matter for non-Italian speakers, relying on the sub-titles, but in fact it is extremely off-putting, with many passages where people's mouths are moving with no words to be heard.

I don't know if this fault only applies to the 'Watch Now' version, or also to the DVD - but if so, it's very sad that such a classic film has been so ruined.

  • Less of a garden, more of a National Park!

A family of aristocratic jews withdraw to their large estate, where they are helpless to do anything but read about the latest racial restrictions and ultimately to resign themselves to their fate. Meanwhile, their son and daughter entertain friends in the garden with bicycle rides and tennis games but their lofty status and desirability are on the wane. Film is highly regarded, but I found it an uneventful, bland, soulless affair. We learn little of the elder family members or their relationship with the outside world or why Dominique Sanda repeatedly teases her boyfriend before sleeping with a stranger. At least the boyfriends family seem real and their terror at unfolding events genuine. Maybe one of those that improves on repeated viewings.
