A masterpiece
By Philip Concannon from London , 03 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Johnnie(Buster Keaton), a train driver, tries to enlist in the civil war but is turned down and his girlfriend is not impressed, 'Don't talk to me again until you're in uniform' she tells him. Things look bad for Johnnie but when northern soldiers steal his train, and his girl, he sets out to save them both.
What follows is a collection of the greatest visual gags, finest comic acting and most draw-dropping stunts in cinema history. Most viewers would think it impossible to construct a chase with trains, after all they are both on tracks and one must also be behind the other. Keaton throws that logic out of the window and endlessly suprises the audience with his imaginative storytelling. He sets increasingly dangerous obstacles for his hero to face(no stunt doubles here) and the ingenious way he overcomes them makes this timeless comedy something truly special. Keaton was also a fine comic actor and reacts to life-threatening situations with a simple look of deadpan bemusement.
This is a solid gold masterpiece which is recommended to viewers of all ages. Unmissable.- Was this review helpful to you?

(36)One of Keaton's best
By LH74 (6 reviews) , 13 Jan 2013Probably one of Buster Keaton's best and most well know films. Excellent remastered music score. Keaton's stunts are still impressive and the humour still fresh to today's audiences.- Was this review helpful to you?

Music score
By busterfan (1 review) , 08 Nov 2012Loved this movie before, must have watched it 100 times, had an old vhs copy with music score by Karl Davies i think it was ?
Was great as the music really fitted the action ,
This version however i lost interest very quickly as the music was less than fitting ,
Still a great classic and well worth watching for Busters unique humour and stunts- Was this review helpful to you?

A difficult film for today's viewer
By Abby88 (167 reviews) from Bognor Regis , 20 Aug 2012Some funny moments and I liked the feel of the film. The beginning and end were alright but the film didn't hold my interest most of the time.- Was this review helpful to you?

The genius of Buster
By reedi (7 reviews) from Peterborough , 24 Jun 2012How this was a box office flop in 1926 is beyond me?, all I can say is that the public of 1926 had no sense of humour because this is simply comedy genius!
The comic timing, the delivery and the stunts Buster did himself are a joy to watch....and all in a silent movie! (not to mention that great music score that helps to take the viewer from comedic moment to action and back!)- Was this review helpful to you?

the general is a great ride
By lukasz84 (75 reviews) , 11 Feb 2012paying attention to buster keaton's work can teach one pretty much everything important there is to know about action and humour in film. the fim's tempo and energy are admirable, not to mention the technical ingenuity.
seeing the movie, one understands how much contemporary's cinema ubiquitous chase sequences owe to keaton's contributions in 'the general'.
this is how adventure should be done in film; up-tempo throughout, with humour, back and forth twists and reversals, surprises, and going out with a big bang!- Was this review helpful to you?
