    [Highly rated reviewer]

This film has, on the face of it, a lot going for it. Great source material, renowned director and some excellent stars. Something, though, is not right about 'The Ghost' ('The Ghost Writer' in other countries).

Comparing it to modern classics of the genre ('Michael Clayton' as an example) shows a slightly flabby delivery, where the neither the plot, or the characters are as sharp as they need to be. Brosnan, for example, is in grinning, charismatic mode, when something darker would have been much more interesting. McGregor is the faint-hearted rabbit in the headlights - blind to obvious plot twists going on all around him.

The defining difficultly, though, is the attempt to 'say something important' about UK-US relations and the 'War on Terror' by reference to real people and unreal events. Not that these sentiments are unwelcome - far from it, just that this film fails to deliver anything other than the cinema equivalent of polite dinner-party conversation in that area.

I was really looking forward to watching this film but was very disappointed to find out that it did not have subtitles. As I am very hard of hearing I can only watch films with subtitles and I have therefore had to return the DVD unwatched. How can a DVD made in 2010 be released without subtitles? I consider this to be an infringement of my human rights.

A unknown writer (McGregor) replaces the previous Ghost writer Mike McAra who is found dead, washed up on a beach believed to be suicide. The subject is one time and unpopular British PM Adam Lang (Brosnan) Something is not quite right and the writer (McGregor) starts to unravel deep secrets of Lang; putting himself in danger - will he end up the same way as his predecessor?
