This is one to watch
By RustyT from Dorset , 23 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film has the most beautiful opening I can remember, blending a lovely tune to beautiful camera work in the Rhone-Alpes countryside.
Sandrine (Mathilde Seigner) has long held the ambition to be a farmer, and after agricultural college she secures a farm in which the previous owner, old Adrien Rochas (Michel Serrault) comes as part of the package, at least for the first year.
He is living there, separate from her. He watches her and comments harshly to his friends, that she's not up to the job. The camera knows different: there is more to him than meets the eye. There is a complex relationship between them which slowly develops. A simple plot lends itself to a beautiful film in which the landscape of the Vercors plateau is a significant player.
Sandrine is a tough cookie, and we see her tackle all manner of problems with her livestock: she appears to have the wherewithal to survive.- Was this review helpful to you?

(71)La Vrai Campagne
By JDAS (3 reviews) , 26 Jan 2013A bit slow but part of our Campagne Francais season.(welldiggers daughter, grocer's son) However, there are two very real french farming scenarios which make this very hard going for any animal lovers or vegetarians- Was this review helpful to you?

Country life
By Electricvic (84 reviews) from London , 28 Jan 2012If you've ever dreamt of moving to the country to become a farmer, this film, set on a remote farm in the French mountains, will puncture a few illusions. Sandrine (Mathilde Seignier) gives up her life as an IT teacher in Paris (which we glimpse as a permanent traffic jam) to retrain as a farmer.
Very soon (although it's a two-year course the plot doesn't hang about) she decides to buy a farm in the Vercors which Adrien (Michel Serrault) has been trying to sell for two years. The only hitch is that he wants to stay on for 18 months and will not lift a finger to help her.
He thinks she won't cut it, sceptical about whether a diploma will help her cope with the rigours of life on an isolated farm which is cut off by heavy snow in winter. Adrien is a definite paysan - literally 'peasant' but meaning something between a farmer and a country-person - who has been on the farm for years and has, we find out, a tragic and bitter history. He is as cold and unwelcoming as a heavy snow fall - will he start to thaw towards the determined Sandrine?
Some people might find this slow moving and scenes of animal slaughter distressing (where do you think your sausages come from?), but it's an enthralling film which never resorts to cliche and really makes you care about how the fish out of water/odd couple storyline plays out.- Was this review helpful to you?

In my top 10
By ceneit (25 reviews) from North Lincs , 16 May 2011This fantastic film , full of hope & joy epitomises why I prefer European ( especially French ) movies to anything else in the world. It is a simple story of one womans determination to succeed which has been done many times before but rarely as well or in such wonderful countryside. Magnifique !- Was this review helpful to you?
