    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is a truly horrific movie that deals 'head-on' with child abuse and which is based loosely on a true story (that of 16 year old Sylvia Likens) and that Jack Ketchum fictionalised as a horror novel. Taken in by their Aunt, who is obviously mentally disturbed, two young sisters become the victims of her sadistic games. The older sister endures increasingly severe cruelties until she finally dies. What makes this all the more incredible (remembering that this is based on fact) is that the woman encouraged her own childern to participate in the girl's torture and also included the local neighbourhood children. It all becomes a 'game' in the movie, as it apparently did in real life. This is a difficult movie to watch in many ways but the young cast do an amazing job in bringing the story to life. The main lead 'Meg' is exceptionally good in a role that must have tested her to the limits. Very hard edged and seriously shocking 'real' horror.

All the reviewers who thought that this is 'distasteful' 'disgusting', 'worst' etc film ever are full of bull! They SHOULD NOT HAVE picked it then, read the movie description next time will you and stop slagging off a truly good movie that actually delivered what it promised! The acting was superb, the story was believable and there is indeed an uncomfortable viewing from time to time, but it was brilliantly acted out and I did shed a tear at the end as I really felt like it was real! Shocking it was indeed, but these things happen, so no point in trying to 'shut off' and ignore' that these 'distasteful' things happen in real life

This movie was really shocking, the lengths they went to abuse her was awful & disgusting. All the actors in the film did a really good job though and the young girl who played Meg was exceptional

This is one of the worst films you will ever see as far as violence and disturbing scenes go. My husband and I watched on in disbelief and by the end I was nearly in tears. We will never watch this film again, but are glad we have seen it as it's based on a true story. This isn't violence for the sake of violence. It is fact, and makes me wonder just what happened to Ruth to make her so twisted. I have seen some of the most violent films ever made and this made me cringe. Not with the gore but with what happens. Be advised - this is truly horrific and uncomfortable to watch.

Even as a fan of the horror films, of uncomfortable true stories, and as someone who appreciated the book on which this film is based, I think this might be one of the worst films I've ever seen. Here are my three main objections: 1. As a film, it's just bad. It's an unimaginative replication of the book and thus just plods through itself before reaching the end. The acting is almost uniformly terrible. For most of the action there is only one adult actor and while she is just about adequate, all of the many child actors are rubbish. This is in-line with the generally low production values of the film. 2. I have never seen a film that involves child actors being subjected to such adult material for such a sustained period. This is not a case in which a director could turn the filming into 'a game' that somehow protects the youngsters from the subject matter. This must have involved days, if not weeks, of the most inappropriate environment for these young actors to have been in. Above all, their parents should be ashamed of themselves and I hope they've put some money aside for their kids' therapy. 3. This is an obvious case of an obscure director, producers and studio trying to make a name for themselves. On the special features they pay lip service to the idea that this film somehow illuminates the issue of abuse. One of them even talks about '18 to 25 year-olds who have no idea what abuse is' learning something from this film. Is there such thing as a young adult who has no concept of 'abuse'? Would such a sheltered individual, should one exist, be watching this movie? I think not. These people can justify the production of this movie all they want, but obviously they just want to create notoriety in order to line their pockets. Don't encourage them to make more films like this. Avoid this movie.
