  • 5 if Elisha was naked... she is a porn star after all.

This movie would be much better if we saw Elisha Cuthbert's naked; she IS a porn star after all. As it stands though, it is almost the definition of a three-point-five star movie. That's saying, it has everything you knew it would have, which makes it very average - but it also throws up some bizarre new twists and turns to the genre, which at least makes it slightly unpredictable. The movie was long, and could have done with some heavy editing; many scenes were just space fillers - particularly filming the imagination of the main character. In an already long movie this was unnecessary. Also the main character; Matthew, is an adolescent 'boy'. Surely they could have chosen someone who looked less like the kid from the wonder years. The belief that Elisha would enjoy the contrast between the usual porn star industry men, and this little boy was a little far fetched, and I can almost guarantee that's why it's never happed. There is nice and then there is naive - he wasn't just a contrast, he was the complete opposite -- trying to hard to be cool, he looked like an insecure little brat - a teenager, not decisively nice at all, just too insecure to argue or defend himself -- definitely too limp wristed to ever pull a post porn star and protect her from the bad porno man. Saying that, it's really Elisha Cuthbert's movie, so he's only a minor inconvenience. Reading other reviews for this movie it seems unanymous - the tag line for this movie should be, 'it's not as bad as I thought'.

  • Pleasantly surprised....worth a watch

I rented this film with low expectations. If you're expecting an american pie smutfest then don't bother, but its a good lighthearted film to watch with your mates/partner. Its not award winning, but you won't get bored watching it and you certainly cant guess how things pan out!

    Give it a shot....

The romcom is a broad church but I never expected it to include teenagers and the porn industry. However, if as reported many teenagers learn about sex from internet porn, then it’s not really surprising that Hollywood has got it’s hands on a piece of the action. If the film does not exactly glamorise the porn industry it certainly never comes close to addressing the damage it does to women forced, as they often are, to work in it. Perhaps it’s churlish to complain, because the young actors are so winningly attractive the film is quite an enjoyable watch. Perhaps I’m just an old fogey to suggest that the whole project is just a tad tacky.

The film was watchable but was identical to so many other teen movies out these days where the geek gets the girl. There were some funny parts to it but nothing as major as I had been led to believe

Amusing film but quite dated now and not of the same quality you'd expect of the modern US teen comedy. Worth a look but not that funny.

  • Not ground breaking but enjoyable. 6/10.

The Girl Next Door is the latest US rom-com with less emphasise on the rom and more on the com. Coined as the next American Pie this film does not really live up to that comparison but does include some of the unmistakable smutty US college humour associated with the American Pie genre. The story follows nerd student Emilie Hirsh as his life is turned upside down when a beautiful girl moves in next door. You can expect the college parties, the usual gags offset by a slightly bizarre, and less common, sub plot involving the always entertaining Timothy Olyphant. There are plenty of laughs here albeit some jokes were lost on us and the general pace of the story is good which made for a good nights entertainment. The romance element was not great but had its feel good moments and the general reaction created by this film was a good one. Not ground breaking but enjoyable all the same. 6/10. 3 Stars.
