Norman Wisdom tried something different from his usual slapstick with this seagoing comedy romance taken from a story by Bertie Wooster creator PG Wodehouse. It doesn't work for Wisdom, though it does for the less mannered professionals in support such as Richard Briers, Millicent Martin and Athene Seyler. It bombed at the box office and Wisdom must have thought he could do nothing right.
A misfiring attempt at a satirical comedy with a miscast star, who looks unhappy in its period setting.
This film is neither Norman Wisdom 'classic' nor a complete bomb. It is a perfectly enjoyable classic British Comedy staring a host of superb homegrown actors including the ever-delightful Norman Wisdom. He plays the familiar comic buffoon character except this one is something of a cad and will stop at nothing to get the girl. There is a scene where his character has a fit of giggles, which is so Wisdom and theres plenty of knockabout action too. It is interesting to see Wisdom in a straighter role, and proves he could do more serious acting. If you are fan of Wisdom's (as I am) no doubt you will enjoy it. The special features even include a commentary by the great man. Though it is more of an interview and given that he is now in his 90's he does have trouble remembering insights from the film and instead gives autobiographical reminiscences from his life. Which of course to any fan are interesting to hear, though its sad to think that he may not be long with us.
It was also fun to see a very youthful Richard Briars, who stars as Wisdom's sidekick best friend.
Overall this film is funny and comfy and so comes well recommended.
