  • A modern Anime classic!

High schoolgirl Makoto Konno literally stumbles upon a strange device that infuses her with the ability to literally leap back in time. Empowered with this fantastic ability Makoto sets out to help her friends and others in need. However, Makoto soon learns that the repercussions of her actions are not always positive.

Based on Yasutaka Tsutsui's popular 1965 novel Toki o Kakeru Shojo, the plot may read like a science fiction yarn, there is a lot more to this story. It is a cautionary tale that reminds us of the importance of making the most of our time and seizing the moment. Due to the complexities of a concept such as time travel, there are however the ubiquitous plot holes that remain unfulfilled but one does not feel the need to dwell on them too much in this instance.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has all the ingredients to be rightfully hailed as a modern classic in Anime film. It carries itself with the whimsical charm of a Studio Ghibli epic with a slight rebellious and esoteric undertone usually associated with Satoshi Kon. It is a visual treat with an intelligent story that has heart and depth that never becomes too demanding, creating an uplifting and rewarding experience for the viewer.

    Highly recommended.

A must to own for all anime fans. At last a rival to studio Ghibli. Top class animation with a story-line to match. Highly recommended.

  • Refreshingly mundane and relaxed

Either I learned Japanese at some point without even realising it or this film was dubbed in English. From what I'd read I was expecting to have to rely on subtitles but that was pleasingly not the case.

I'd definitely recommend this if you're into anime and sci-fi. Although it isn't as action packed as some films it was a refreshing change not to have to worry about the fate of the world.

  • Time Lies Waiting In The Wings

I used to get very annoyed at time travel based stories. People seemed not to get the idea of how changing events affects future/past continuums (keep up). And characters were always very slow to realise they weren't in Kansas anymore. This little diamond has no such issues. It gets the point. It understands cause and effect and uses it to perfection as a story telling tool. The high standard of voice acting and animation combine to make this a quality experience. These characters are more realistic and engaging than some ... make that MANY over paid Hollywood headliners. Production values, attention to detail, characterisation. It's at times like this that I keenly feel the sting of the bias against cartoons, fiction and comic book stories when it comes to handing out the big awards. Can NOT overstate how well this is made. Well, given a chance I could. I just want to rant on and on about how intelligent and inclusive the writing is. They credit you with enough sense to keep up without making disjointed leaps as can be the case elsewhere. Like Ground Hog Day with sprinkles ... and nuts ... and a cherry topping. Yumee!

  • "This film was rubbish... because I am a mouth breathing idiot."

I like animation, I like listening to Japanese and reading English at the same time and I like a slow and thoughtful story based on subtle science fiction themes. So I'm giving this 5 stars. (PS: this review is to counteract all the idiots who give an excellent film 1 star because they hadn't realised it was a 'cartoon', was 'in foreign' and/or they can't be bothered to read subtitles or thought it was boring and stopped watching after 5 minutes. Why do such people bother writing reviews... or carry on breathing? Honestly.)
