This crime drama and its 1974 sequel are among American cinema's finest achievements since the Second World War. The production problems are well documented — how Paramount wanted a quickie, how Francis Ford Coppola came cheap and how he turned the picture into an epic success, a box-office hit that was also an artistic triumph. His first masterstroke was casting Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton, four relative unknowns and one known risk; his next masterstroke was to keep cool under fire, like Michael Corleone himself, turning Mario Puzo's pulp novel into art and showing how capitalism and crime go hand in hand. It's thrilling, romantic, tense and scary — a five-course meal that leaves you hungry for more.

A brilliantly-made film with all the fascination of a snake pit: a warm-hearted family saga except that the members are thieves and murderers. Cutting would help, but the duller conversational sections do heighten the cunningly judged moments of suspense

    The greatest film ever made!

A fantastic director at his best.

A lead cast who all deserved best actor and actress oscars.

    Fantastic!!!

It reveals something new everytime you watch it!

A true epic masterpiece! A winner of Best Picture in 1972, and also nominated for ten Academy Awards, I rate this film as the best gangster movie of all time.

But, classifying it within just a gangster movie does no justice to the tightly plotted script based on Mario Puzo’s novel. The way it weaves all the layers of story telling, and depicts the life of an Italian gangster family in America is remarkable. The story views the Mafia from the inside. It blends in family responsibility, a father’s legacy, and projects how power, respect, and loyalty is used to protect their own genre.

The large cast is artfully drawn together, which will put you at once into the world of The Godfather. It has strong performances by Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall. Marlon Brando who plays the ageing Don is best remembered for this role.

Solid directing by Francis Ford Coppola also make this a treat to watch. The way he cleverly structures his film creates sympathy for the characters who are essentially evil.

Nino Rota, the composer of the film does a brilliant job. Listening to the sad and nostalgic main theme itself tells you what the movie is about.

The film is packed with classic lines. It is quite long, but it is time well spent. It’s the first part of the trilogy, and when the credits roll you will yearn for the second. The best is yet to come!

    A true Classic.

This films is one of the reasons why services like this are such a great idea. Your average high street chain just doesn't have the room to store films like this.

I've been one of those people who didn't see this film until I rented it here. Cue everyone I've ever told that saying 'what do you mean, you've never seen The Godfather?'. Well, I have now... and it is amazing. Tightly scripted, inventively directed and wonderfully acted - definitely Coppola's best work before he started to believe his own hype.

Al Pacino is masterful. This is one of those films that truly deserve the Best Picture Oscar it won. This is a 'must see'.

    A Class Act

If you have seen it but don't own it, you'll remember (correctly) that it is a 5 star class act of a film and hire it. If you haven't seen it, well what are you waiting for?

    More Like the Cod Father

The film is like a wet fish. I really dont know what people see in this. Its dull, overly long, dated, and just plain poor. Not my cup of tea at all.

    How film making should be

This film deserves every accolade it gets. This is how film making should be and Coppola has produced a work of pure genius. Great and varied characters, from hot headed Sonny to the quiet menace that is Al Pacino, and of course, the man himself, Brando. This film gives you a superb feel for the family and organisation as a whole rather than focus on any one character and this is what makes it a winner. An absolute must-see film for any self-respecting man. Possibly the greatest film ever made.

    Disappointing

After years of everyone I've ever known telling me to watch The Godfather, I don't think I will be passing the recommendation along. This film pushed 3 hours, and despite enjoying the film at the beginning and the brief section in Sicily, I was trying to stay awake most of the time.

I found it very hard to keep track of who was who and which side was killing which...and I didn't have much understanding/sympathy for the majority of characters either.

Worth watching if you like this sort of thing...not for me though.

    Don't waste your time!

This film is POOR. I watched the first hour thinking 'something must happen soon' but it never did, so I gave up. Try pulling your toenails out with a pair of pliers; you will enjoy it more than this film!
