Fantasy epic The Golden Compass has stayed at the top of the UK box office chart for another week, suggesting that the film might be just as popular as the books on which it is based. Starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, The Golden Compass has now taken more than £12.2 million in ticket sales, according to AC Nielsen. Fantasy adventure film The Golden Compass debuted at the top of the UK box office this week, taking more than £7.2 million in ticket sales. Data from AC Nielsen placed the movie, which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, at number one, followed by festive comedy Fred Claus at number two. Fantasy adventure story The Golden Compass debuted at the top of the US box office this week, taking $25.8 million (£12.58 million) in box office receipts. According to data from the Hollywood Reporter, the movie knocked family comedy Enchanted off the top spot for the week ending December 9th. Weitz to quit Hollywood

The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz will retire from Hollywood after just one more movie. Weitz, who also made About A Boy and The Golden Compass, admits he has been put off filmmaking by the bureaucracy of big movie studios and he'd rather spend his time relaxing and learning new skills.
