The Good Girl

THE GOOD GIRL, directed by Miguel Arteta and written by Mike White, stars Jennifer Aniston as Justine, a sullen 30-year-old woman stuck in a dead-end job at the Retail Rodeo department store. In addition to her mind-numbing occupation, Justine also has to contend with her dim-witted husband Phil (John C. Reilly) and his friend Bubba (Tim Blake Nelson), who work as house painters when they aren't smoking pot and staring blankly at the television screen. Justine sees an opportunity for change when she meets Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal), a fellow Retail Rodeo employee who is even more depressed than herself. The young Holden (who patterns himself after Holden Caulfield of J.D. Salinger's THE CATCHER IN THE RYE) and Justine soon begin a passionate secret affair, unaware that it may not be so secret after all.
With THE GOOD GIRL, Arteta and White, the creators of the indie hit CHUCK & BUCK, have fashioned yet another oddly affecting comedy out of misery and obsession. Playing the polar opposite of the character she plays on the TV show FRIENDS, Aniston is outstanding as Justine, a melancholy wife torn between the temptation of an affair and loyalty to her husband. Gyllenhaal is excellent as Justine's angst-ridden younger beau, while Reilly plays her slacker spouse to perfection. Also notable in their supporting roles are Nelson, who portrays a scheming stoner; screenwriter White, who appears as Retail Rodeo's pious security guard; and Zooey Deschanel, who gleefully dispenses sarcasm as a customer-hating clerk. A delicate balance of dark humor and sincere emotion, THE GOOD GIRL stands out as an overachieving film about underachieving people.

Small-town America comes in for another indie lashing in this patchy, pathos-packed comedy. Jennifer Aniston will surprise many as the shopgirl whose infatuation with wannabe writer Jake Gyllenhaal sends ripples through her insular Texan community. But it's the peripheral characters who bring some much-needed colour to the occasionally predictable proceedings, most notably born-again security guard Mike White and mischievous makeover clerk Zooey Deschanel, although John C Reilly and Tim Blake Nelson are typically sound as Aniston's forgiving husband and his scheming pal. It's engaging and enjoyable, but lacks the edge of Miguel Arteta's previous offerings, Star Maps and Chuck & Buck.

    Top marks for Jennifer Aniston

I love Jennifer Aniston from Friends where of course we all know her as Rachel. But I think I loved this film even more, Jennifer Aniston is amazing in this serious role, and all the other actors are great too. Jake Gyllenhaal does his dark, confussed teenager thing to far greater effect than in Donny Darko, since this film has a real plot. The story is dark, tragic and touching. It deals with stuff that you can really relate to, i.e. do we take the boring, safe, 'good girl' route or the exciting, new yet dangerous one?

This film keeps you watching until the end and is very moving and satisfying. Top marks to Jennifer Aniston for breaking the Rachel mold, top marks to the film makers for giving her such a wonderful lead role. Better than Bruce Almighty which of course is just a Jim Carey flick. I'll be interested to see her next film Along came Polly.

    Not such a good girl.

This film is a quiet and charming but surreal and terrifying look into the heart of small town America. The boredom of Justine must strike a note with anyone who has ever worked in a stifling job. The ennui and general malaise she feels in her relationship, will probably strike a cord with most women.

The tragicomic tone doesn't fit easily into mainstream Hollywood cinema's categories and in truth, it probably has more in common with british films - this finely balanced blend of black humour and general awfulness of ordinary life, is something I would expect to see starring Victoria Wood or Julie Walters, more than the glamorous Mrs Pitt but you know you have a proper actor when that person is prepared to present themselves without vanity, for the sake of accurately portraying the character. Where Anniston has failed in the past, has been that her films have been vainglorious vehicles. Seeing her here, wearing terrible jeans and bad shoes, not being afraid to be unglamorous, makes you realise that she has the talent required to lose her typecast image.

Ultimately Justine’s cowardice, amorality, and apathy are what make the film really work - because they are believable as the film reveals that gentle yellow streak that runs down the human spine. I hope to see more work of this quality from Anniston - it would be a real loss if we didn't.
