    [Highly rated reviewer]

I love Jennifer Aniston from Friends where of course we all know her as Rachel. But I think I loved this film even more, Jennifer Aniston is amazing in this serious role, and all the other actors are great too. Jake Gyllenhaal does his dark, confussed teenager thing to far greater effect than in Donny Darko, since this film has a real plot. The story is dark, tragic and touching. It deals with stuff that you can really relate to, i.e. do we take the boring, safe, 'good girl' route or the exciting, new yet dangerous one?

This film keeps you watching until the end and is very moving and satisfying. Top marks to Jennifer Aniston for breaking the Rachel mold, top marks to the film makers for giving her such a wonderful lead role. Better than Bruce Almighty which of course is just a Jim Carey flick. I'll be interested to see her next film Along came Polly.

  • Underrated, oozing with gentle melancholy and hope

This film nearly passed me by but its a gem. Its beautiful, with great acting and an exquisite score. Its about the realisation and gentle acceptance of our lives and the subtle things and people in it that we overlook. The gentle hope that we find in the most deadend areas of life.

Jennifer Anistons best performance in my opinion.

It has become one of my favourite films because its one that stays with you a while and softens your heart. Like Little Fish.

  • Dull but intriguing.

This isn't really my type of film so to be honest I wasn't expecting to enjoy it, and I didn't. But in an attempt to review it objectively I've found it rather easy to find many of the good qualities this film possesses.

Jennifer Aniston is Justine Last, a bored housewife with a dead end job in an extremely dull department store. Her house painter husband Phil (John C. Reilly) spends most of his time lazing on the couch getting stoned with his one and only friend and colleague Bubba (Tim Blake Nelson). Then one day Justine meets new employee Holden Worther (Jake Gyllenhaal), a somewhat morose young man who likes to write depressing little stories. Needless to say they begin an affair.

At first this film appears every bit as dull and unorigional as it sounds. But it's really not. Though the story may not be anything awe inspiring it is very touching at times. And the acting from all is absolutely superb, most surprisingly from Aniston herself, whom I have clearly always underrated as an actress.

Not being my type of movie I found myself bored less than half way through, but I stuck with it out of a desire to see how it all panned out. And I'm glad I did as what I got was a mildly thought provoking tale that portrayed the underlying panic of a woman who feels trapped by her own mistakes.

I've given it a fairly low rating as I did find it boring after a while, but don't be misled by that, as a drama it has everything it needs. Recommended to those who like this kind of thing.

A friend recommended I watch this film and I was sceptical because it looked like another cheesy American 'comedy' ('American comedy' being an oxymoron for me lately). I must admit, the first twenty minutes surprised me. Jennifer Aniston was, for once, acting like a human being rather than the stereotypical formula of 'dim-witted adult behaving like a child', which hallmarks American comedy these days. I was impressed with Aniston's ability to shed the big grin and look like a person and her disenchanted character in the film was, to begin with, appealing and refreshing in its contrast with the 'big smile', let's be positive culture oozing from Hollywood.

My objection to the film isn't so much Jennifer Aniston's acting, but the message which the film sends to its audiences, which can be summarised as 'bored houswife, disenchanted and jaded by life in corporate-run america falls in love with cynical outsider, cheats on her well-meaning, infertile husband, then proceeds to use her lover for sex, finds herself pregnant with his child, tries to poison him [her lover], attempts to have him committed to a psychiatric institute, betrays him to the police resulting in his death, has the child and goes back to her husband'.

the strengths of the film lie in the fact that it doesn't entail its characters having to act like dim children to get laughs, but on the whole plays it straight and the black humour emerges from the tragedy of its circumstances. However, the moral message left me feeling sickened, particularly because such an insipid message is passed off in a passive, innocent fashion. The result is a terrible film made for all the wrong reasons.
