A very good film, great directing and acting, marvellous sountrack.Really enjoyable.

This is a 60s film which is very good.
(in a not very good era for movies, but a GREAT decade for music).But forget the music for a moment ( see below)-----there is no doubt that this film is a real 4 star vehicle.
Two new stars were cast as two of the three main players : Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross are the young newcomers; and Anne Bancroft is the more mature star of the trio. It is very rare that all the leading characters in a movie are nominated for Oscars, but that's what happened in this film in the late 1960s ( and even more remarkable that none of the trio picked up an Award). In fact, the film missed out on all but one ( Best Director, well earned by Mike Nichols) of the 7 Oscars for which it was nominated.
But the nominations speak volumes and, yes, I do think Academy Award nominations mean something (about 75% of the time over the years).
This film is an example. There is something that made it one of the best films of 1967, and one that is still well-worth watching today long after the 60s are gone.....because its storyline does not rely on any particular era.
The same cannot be said for the music, which is a sublime example of one type of the music from the best music decade of the century. The soundtrack is VERY 60s. It is wonderful ( and completely ignored by the Academy in getting no nominations ----a good example of the 25% where they are best ignored LOL---music that was not recognised at the time as being so influential and representative of a generation: only history can look back and realise such things).I saw a poll recently which gave this soundtrack the 'Best-Ever' position. I'm hard-pressed to disagree, certainly in terms of songs rather than the 'no lyrics' film soundtracks.
The film itself is not an outstanding work of art, though, as I've said, very good, very enjoyable, very 'classic' status now, and rightly so. The storyline is not fascinating : it's just a young , college-age boy seduced by an older woman,with severe repercussions for his love of young Katharine Ross' character. But the way the plot is handled by the director and the acting talent on show raises it above its not-so-unique plot.
Personally,this film is nostalgia for me of a special time, but my review is objective and I refrain from a higher star rating just because of my own feelings.
Whether you're a fan of the 60s or not, I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy a very good film.- Was this review helpful to you?

In my opinion arguable one of the best films ever made. Brilliant cast,(a very young Hoffmann and Katherine Ross), script, score and plot..I have watched it more times than I wish to own up to. Captures the scariness of being a young adult but also the innocence and optimism. A truly great love story with an infamous iconic last scene for its ending. Still perfect 46 years later

Painful to watch

Mrs Robinson you’re trying to seduce me!

Classic late sixties comedy drama with Dustin Hoffman playing the lead as good as anything else he’s done and playing off well against an ice-cool Anne Bancroft.
Obviously it has dated in certain areas but it still looks great and the dialogue is well written although it does get a bit silly towards the end despite the final brilliant scene.
The music is mainly done by Simon and Garfunkel which is fine but there is definitely an overuse of Scarborough Fair.- Was this review helpful to you?
