Elucidating entertainment,By crockery (137 reviews) from Belfast , 30 Mar 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]THE GREAT DEBATERS is a movie-going treat, with young people exemplifying truth, respect, pride and dignity. In an entertaining way, with some preaching, this movie shows four African-American debaters succeeding in the face of adversity, growing stronger with success AND defeat. Their debates are lively and thought provoking.
However, before, during and after these contests, other serious and complicated issues are revealed. Two of these issues deal with a confrontation on the road between two farmers and a minister, and a lynching in the middle of the night. Both are reflections of the time, unsettling and disturbing to those in the movie and in the audience.
This is not family entertainment, nor is it mindless entertainment. It has no gratuitous sex, but there is a hint of romance. It is fast paced, but the action is verbal not physical. THE GREAT DEBATERS lives up to its name in that it has something for everyone, and not everyone will like it. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a quality film that will be debated by all who see it!
Well done, Mr Washington !!! Denzel Washington's second feature as director and done a fantastic job !!! It's a really great movie with lot of feel good factor.
And young Mr Denzel Whitaker as the young prodigy - outstanding !!!

Unmasking the swinging pendulum of truthBy a customer , 17 Mar 2013compelling and revealing, a true masterpiece of how not to loose an argument and an intelligent representation of civil liberty, jolly delightful.
Interesting to see real life father Forest Whitaker and son Denzel Whitaker on screen togetherBy twosoddingcats (269 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 04 Feb 2013Denzel Washington, a lecturer at all black Wiley College in Marshall, Texas forms an award winning debate team in 1935 (they remained unbeaten for 10 years after their win against Harvard). This film is really about the oppression of African Americans at the time and does show a lynching which is quite gruesome but I felt had to be included as they did lynch African Americans in Texas at the time. Uplifting and directed capably by Denzel Washington. I wonder if Forest named his son after Denzel?
Fantastic writingBy Bigbadboss (2 reviews) , 14 Jan 2013A fantastic script with a fantastic cast. Watch and enjoy! Can't understand why the screen is made smaller on my smart tv - Very frustrating! Can't take anything away from the film though.
Denzel in form (again)By gauravm (1 review) , 13 Jan 2013Good film with a sterling performance from Denzel. Supporting actors were also very good with good chemistry between them. The film while being based on a true story deviates from actual events. It does not however harm the storyline and screenplay. It is hard to imagine the horrors that minorities had to undergo as recently as 1900s. Movies like this bring these issues to light and the challenges that people had to encounter just to be treated as equals.
Watch it!By Aurelia (1 review) , 03 Dec 2012This film is incredible. I wanted to watch a Denzel film and this does not disappoint. Would recommend to anyone!
