Escape story based on fact

As a war time escape film it has all the drama and action with some good acting from Richard Attenborough, Steve McQueen, James Garner and many others.
Although it follows the real story to a point it does not show the skill with which the pow's burrowed their tunnels, some 30ft down, with the crudest of tools.
Still trying to figure out just where Steve McQueen obtained a 1950's Triumph motorcycle from in the 1940's ?
