"All fur coat and no knickers"

We read The Great Gatsby at book club and this film adaptation was eagerly anticipated. As a fan of Baz Luhrmann's work, I was dazzled by the glitzy kitsch, awed by the spectacle and liked the modern music. Fabulous set design, alarming sweeps and swoops of camera work, which felt like being on a fair ground ride, it was a visual delight. But like a banquet of excess one is left feeling vaguely unsatisfied, the morning after it feels hollow and empty. Other critics have reflected this as a metaphor for the life of Gatsby. Toby Maguire's performance as Nick Carraway the narrator was somewhat compelling, DiCaprio as Gatsby less so and Carey Mulligan as Daisy adequate. I really wanted to love this film. Sadly, it lacked the magic of Romeo and Juliet and my morning after reflection is ' all fur coat and no knickers!'- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)A really good love story...
By Rampz (3 reviews) , 18 May 2013Another film I really enjoyed. Having not watched the original or read the book, the film wasn't quite what I expected. I thought there would be more action and gangster goings on etc, but it is what it is, definitely a love story. A really good love story at that.- Was this review helpful to you?
