Most helpful review
A very good rendition of the novel
By Alan Cunnane from London, England , 13 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Very watchable performances from Robert Redford as Gatsby, the self-made man who throws the best parties but doesn't like to attend them; and Mia Farrow as his love interest. The development of their relationship, through to the tragic conclusion, is engrossing throughout.
I read the book years ago, and having watched the film want to read it again to compare, but if memory serves, the film is quite faithful to the original story.
A very watchable film - recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

(12)A faithful adaptation.
By a customer , 16 May 2013A faithful adaptation of the original novel. Robert Redford is excellent in this 1970's version of the tale of bootlegger and millionaire Jay Gatsby. The story is set in the 'jazz age' of 1920's East Coast America and depicts the lives of the super wealthy. Narrated by Nick Carraway, Gatsby's neighbour, it centres around the mysterious and elusive title character and his pursuit of former love Daisy Buchanan. I enjoyed this version of the film and I am looking forward to comparing it to the upcoming Baz Luhrman version which I expect will be the definitive film version of this classic American novel.- Was this review helpful to you?

Well worth watching
By a customer , 11 Nov 2011I loved this film on release in the 1970's.. even the questionable acting skills of Mia Farrow couldn't spoil it for me !! I watched it again in 2001 . Its a slow paced film but beautifully treated and such a poignant story of Love, from the angles of the driven poor and the bored rich in the 1920's....I .have'nt read the book , so cannot offer a comparison.- Was this review helpful to you?

Book is better
By FilmKatie (2 reviews) from Haywards Heath , 19 Jun 2010It should work; America's finest novel, Robert Redford (at the time) was the biggest and best star / actor around...and yet it failed to capture the times or the book.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic
By a customer from Nottingham , 18 Jun 2009I read this book as part of my A Level English Lit course and i couldnt remember ever watching the film so thought i'd give it a go. It's a classic film about love, focusing on a married couple and their affairs. The sets are beautiful especially Gastby's mansion, all set in the roaring 1920's. Beautiful costumes and well cast characters complete the look. You should watch this if you like period dramas set in the 1920's or like love storys. It's true not a great deal happens until towards the end. It was an enjoyable film even if the last line of the book is missed out which is a shame as its one of my favourite quotes of all time! 'So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past'.- Was this review helpful to you?
