Most helpful review The Great Gatsby

  • A very good rendition of the novel

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Very watchable performances from Robert Redford as Gatsby, the self-made man who throws the best parties but doesn't like to attend them; and Mia Farrow as his love interest. The development of their relationship, through to the tragic conclusion, is engrossing throughout.

I read the book years ago, and having watched the film want to read it again to compare, but if memory serves, the film is quite faithful to the original story.

A very watchable film - recommended.

....why, of course you can!' So believes Jay Gatsby, in one of the novel's/film's great lines. But we know differently, don't we, old sport. This 1974 movie is probably the definitive film version of what has been described as America's finest novel, and the casting of Redford as the titular Gatsby couldn't be better. I'm not entirely sure Mia Farrow is the best choice as Daisy but, all in all, she pulls it off. The story and the dialogue, and the general look of the film: these are all so good - how can we not enjoy it. Format: DVD

  • A faithful adaptation.

A faithful adaptation of the original novel. Robert Redford is excellent in this 1970's version of the tale of bootlegger and millionaire Jay Gatsby. The story is set in the 'jazz age' of 1920's East Coast America and depicts the lives of the super wealthy. Narrated by Nick Carraway, Gatsby's neighbour, it centres around the mysterious and elusive title character and his pursuit of former love Daisy Buchanan. I enjoyed this version of the film and I am looking forward to comparing it to the upcoming Baz Luhrman version which I expect will be the definitive film version of this classic American novel.

I loved this film on release in the 1970's.. even the questionable acting skills of Mia Farrow couldn't spoil it for me !! I watched it again in 2001 . Its a slow paced film but beautifully treated and such a poignant story of Love, from the angles of the driven poor and the bored rich in the 1920's....I .have'nt read the book , so cannot offer a comparison.

It should work; America's finest novel, Robert Redford (at the time) was the biggest and best star / actor around...and yet it failed to capture the times or the book.
