John Hughes's attempt to re-create the success of the previous year's adult comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles backfires in this routine outing. John Candy, the obnoxious one in the aforementioned Planes, gets to be the nice guy this time around, finding himself stuck on vacation with his appalling brother-in-law, Dan Aykroyd. The two stars do their best, but Hughes's script is a mechanical retread of past glories and director Howard Deutch fails to bring much inspiration to the lumbering slapstick. Look out for a pre-stardom Annette Bening in a supporting role.
Broad and tiresome comedy in which its participants flail around noisily to no particular purpose.
When an unannounced, uninvited and unwelcome family of fun-loving misfits, converge upon a lakeside resort, to join their relatives for a summer of relaxation, the result is anything but restful.
It is Chet's (played by John Candy) worst nightmare, as wheeler-dealer Roman ( played by Dan Ackroyd), his wife and twin daughters join the easygoing Chet and his straight-laced clan for a season of 'fun' in the sun.
Unfortunately, the only thing these two in-laws have in common is their intense dislike for each other.
Soon, it's brother-in-law against brother-in-law in an uproarious and hilarious fight to the finish to see which one really knows how to enjoy 'The Great Outdoors'.
