  • superb family film

    [Highly rated reviewer]

When an unannounced, uninvited and unwelcome family of fun-loving misfits, converge upon a lakeside resort, to join their relatives for a summer of relaxation, the result is anything but restful.

It is Chet's (played by John Candy) worst nightmare, as wheeler-dealer Roman ( played by Dan Ackroyd), his wife and twin daughters join the easygoing Chet and his straight-laced clan for a season of 'fun' in the sun.

Unfortunately, the only thing these two in-laws have in common is their intense dislike for each other.

Soon, it's brother-in-law against brother-in-law in an uproarious and hilarious fight to the finish to see which one really knows how to enjoy 'The Great Outdoors'.

Dan Aykroyd and John Candy what more can you ask for. Only let down is John Candys sons tedious story meeting a local girl which isn't funny nor particularly interesting. Fav bit for me has to be the steak challenge. Watched so many times when I was a kid.

Wow ... The Eighties. The social historians of the future will surely be called upon to answer some of the vital questions that emerge from this film. Did we really think once that talking racoons were amusing? Were we so desperate that we actually bought cinema tickets for something so unbelievably witless as this? What on earth was Dan Aykroyd doing in such dull stuff? Ditto Annette Bening?

This film is just genius. John Candy was a very, very funny man. Laugh out loud at times, lots of times in fact. It's simply brilliant.
