SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR !By Peter Hughes from Burnham. Bucks. , 15 Apr 2010
[Highly rated reviewer]To all intent & purpose this movie has the potential to merit 4/5 stars. The story is excellent as is the cast and many will be captivated from start to finish. However, the producer/director gave little or no thought to many of his viewers who are inflicted with impaired hearing. Subsequently the dialogue, at times was garbled to say the least. WILL THOSE WHO PRODUCE MOVIES FOR DVD EVER GET THE MESSAGE-- SUBTITLES ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND HOPEFULLY SOME MAY READ MY COMMENTS.

Not the greatest film but watchableBy The KnightWatcher (629 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 13 Mar 2013Romantic drama / weepie. Fantastic cast; Pierce Brosnam, Sarandon, Mulligan. Deals with aftermath of sons death. Girlfriend was pregnant . Mother becomes obsessed with finding out the details of sons last moments driving the surviving family apart. Sensitively deals with deep issues , but the plot lacks credibility. Watchable average film.
best ever filmBy kirti1992 (3 reviews) , 10 Mar 2013that is the best film i have watch in a long time the acting in it was great and the story line was the best
No surprises or twists - below averageBy PaulHappy (154 reviews) , 04 Mar 2013Quite bland and very predictable. No twists or surprises and it could have been a better movie if some had been added - there were plenty of opportunities to do so. With Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon appearing I thought it might have some sparkle but sadly it did not. Carey Mitchell could have been put to better use which would have improved the movie but again that did not happen either. Overall barely watchable - but if like me you wait for a twist or something unpredictable then don't be disappointed if you are kept waiting
Strange little film.By a customer , 22 Oct 2012A strange little film that moves along at it's own pace. Not a bundle of laughs more a slice of true life's little ups and downs. Script is quite good and the acting is very good. A gentle look at life and death.
The Title Reflects The Film.By HaveMySay (133 reviews) , 10 Sep 2012Have your tissues ready, yes it's that type of film; and if you don't shed a little tear there's something wrong with you.
'The Greatest' is a brill title for a really great drama.
Stars many greats- Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan and Johnny Simmons. Each and every film I watch with Carey Mulligan in it gets better and better. A true star in the making, and a BRIT!
'The Greatest' is the story of an affluent family who seem to have it all, seem to be perfect; but like everything in the world, if you dig enough it's never all that it seems to be on the surface.
Bennett (played by another Brit- Aaron Johnson) falls in love with Rose (Carey Mulligan) but takes a long time to eventually let her know his feelings for her. Once this is done, it's a whirlwind romance that quickly ends one night when Bennett stops his car in the middle of the road.
The outcome is:
1. A dead young man.
2. A man in a coma.
3. A grieving family- each dealing with his death in different ways.
4. A pregnant Rose.
What happens next with the above information, you'll have to watch to find out. As i'm only telling you what the synopsis describes, so the film doesn't get spoilt.
A good watch!
