LOVEFiLM Review The Green Hornet

  • 2.5 stars out of 5

Seth Rogen stars as Britt Reid while Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou makes his English-speaking debut as Kato, in this big-budget film version of the comic book and TV series.

The film is fine if you have no expectations - we laughed and thorughly enjoyed this film with a load of popcorn. It's entertaining and that's that.

  • Good for with Mates

Was fun to watch with a mate, some quite funny moments, didn't fail miserably to entertain and was worth the watch so I didn't really care to notice or critise bad points (if they were there).

  • A Disappointment From The Lead Down

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I came into this film with no pre-conceptions, and little ambition but to have a little fun. I wanted excitement, a humour, easy watching and solid entertainment. The far-from-perfect The Losers had provided that the previous evening, and I was hungry for more.

Even though I expected little, I was sorely disappointed. The cast, the script, the story - all utterly drab and lifeless. Despite a lavish budget (which really shows), this is a wreck of a film which is really very hard to enjoy.

It all starts with the leading role: Seth Rogan is rubbish. Rogan suceeds in bit-parts and minor roles, he tends to be charasmatic actor who I enjoy without ever falling in love with. He's totally miscast here. Imagine if Mike Myers or Will Ferrell played Batman: the humorous, goofy lead doesn't gel with the demands of the film. Even worse, Rogan doesn't even bring much charm to the table. He's annoyingly obtuse, his mannerisms are repetitive, stale and unnatural. He just doen't have the acting chops to carry the film. Unlike, say, Robert Downey Jr - who in my opinion carried the first two Iron Man films at times.

Th problems spiral out to something of an identity crisis. The Green Hornet tries to be both an exciting action movie and an endearing comedy. These ambitions collide dreadfully, the one underming the other at regular turns. The script isn't funny. The action scenes lack logic and credibility, while some of the more experimental effects simply don't work. The result is tawdy action, bad (and predictable) comedy, and ineffective drama.

Perhaps, though, the film never stood a chance. The central conceit of a goofy heroic facade backed by a talented, anonymous jobsbody is trite and annoying. Kid's cartoons have done it for years. Straight comedies like Naked Gun make it work because that's the joke. But Green Hornet's dynamic duo is simply painful to watch at times; Kano's whining is insufferable and Reid's posturing is unbearable. Seldom have a less likable pair tried to turn a bad joke good.

I don't often do this, but I turned the Green Hornet off after about 80 minutes. Despite clearly having a solid budget, some good choreography and excellent production (it's very easy on the eye, at least), this is one of the worst films I've seen in years.

Christoph Waltz still manages to be pretty good, though.

Great fun. Shades of The Pink Panther (not the Steve Martin one!!). Car with green headlights - how cool is that. Comic book, larger than life, sit back and enjoy the ride

Not a bad little movie, I never saw the original TV series and all I saw of the Green Hornet was when he appeared on a couple of the episodes of the Batman TV series. The movie is an entertaining check out your brain popcorn movie with good action and some cool set pieces, worth a watch on a Saturday night or with the kids
