Unlike Eric Rohmer's previous films, the dialogue of this comedy of manners was almost entirely improvised by the actors. How one reacts to the film may depend on how one reacts to the character of the overly fastidious Delphine, played superbly by Marie Rivière. Not knowing what to do on her holidays, she goes to Cherbourg, then the mountains and then Biarritz, but is bored and depressed everywhere until she meets the man of her dreams. The title, taken from the Jules Verne novel, refers to the last ray of sunset, the green of which is supposed to make observers more aware of the feelings and perceptions of others. Rohmer's intelligent films have much the same effect.
With its improvised dialogue and less than sympathetic heroine, the movie lacks the precision and interest of Rohmer's best work, even if the theme remains the same.
This is an extremely interesting film. If you enjoy the magic of sunsets, the intuitive sensitivity of a searching lover, a passion for interesting conversation, then I am sure that you will love this film. It is a little gem. Ok, there are a few technical problems with the quality of the film stock in some places; not enough to spoil my enjoyment though. I have watched this film three times, once at the NFT and twice on DVD and, for me at least, it repays repeated viewings. Rohmer is a master of working up his film script in detail with his cast during rehearsal and it really pays off here. Each scene has the intensity of real people sharing their lives, thoughts, feelings and experiences. The film is a channel through which we can really connect with the life of an ordinary French woman as she looks for a love that will enrich her life. A most life enhancing film.
We really enjoyed this. The heroine got on our nerves quite a bit, but I guess that she is supposed to, so that is OK. It is easygoing, and nicely made.
