Superior American RemakeBy Samuel Tyler from Reading, England , 11 Nov 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]This film has received mixed reviews from people in the Media with the likes of Hotdog magazine giving it 4 out of 5 while News of the World only give it 1. Depending on which of these two titles you are more likely to agree with will go a long way on deciding whether this film is for you.
Remade from a Japanese horror film of the same name and by the same director, The Grudge represents a new type of sub-genre yet to hit the West. Rather than go for the out and out shocks of its American counterparts The Grudge builds up the tension with strange occurrences and non-linear storyline.
I personally felt it was the scariest film I have seen for a long time and would recommend it to not only Japanese film fans but also horror fans. Probably one to miss though if you are not a fan of a more leisurely paced film.

One of the few better USA remakesBy JustKewl (105 reviews) from Ipswich , 03 Apr 2009The U.S. aren't well known for their remakes of freign horror films. I refused to watch their version of 'the ring'. However, thought I'd give The Grudge a go. I was both surprised and relieved to find the the U.S. version did the film justice. Mind you, I haven't see the original but, if I find the American version great then... I can't imagine how breath taking the original most be. I think that fact that the original Japenese producer took on the American made this film as brilliant as it is. From the Japenese horror I've seen, the U.S. remakes keeps faith with how Japenese horror film unfolds over time during the film. There's one element that I definitaly believe is taken from The Ring but, that doesn't cheapen The Grudge.
Yep, I recommend it. It's frightening but not particularly blood thirsty. It's a real heart stopping thriller piece. Very a much a film to hide behind the sofa.
