Quite Brilliant

When 'The Guard' was released in Ireland a few weeks ago it took the box office and critics alike , by storm.
Directed by John Michael McDonagh the brother of Martin, who directed the excellent ' In Bruge' and starring the same actor Brendan Gleeson , this film is a little gem.
Gleeson stars along side Don Cheadle as two very different police officers who are investigating a drugs cartel.
The Dialogue is fantastic and although the director denies it , it seems written for the brilliant Gleeson.
It is extremely funny and some of it reminds me of the early Tarentino movies, ( without the extreme violence).
The story is very good too and if i had to criticise it for anything it's because at 90 minutes it's too short.
I wanted more!
The Guard is a low budget movie that deserves all the great reviews it is getting.

Surprisingly good

Aw Feck!
By MAXIMILIAN (180 reviews) from BURNHAM , 30 May 2013THE GUARD is a film that has been recommended by the panel on The Review Show on BBC2, by EMPIRE magazine who gave the film a 5 star unmissable status review, and by my Uncle, who also said it was very good. So, I was looking forward to seeing it. But all I was left with afterwards was a crushing sense of disappointment. The film is OK – nothing more than that. I love IN BRUGES, that was a really brilliant film. THE GUARD on the other hand seems like just another routine cop buddy movie (like LETHAL WEAPON). Certainly, the white cop/black cop dynamic comes straight from the Mel Gibson/Danny Glover mold. BRENDAN GLEESON is certainly very good as Gerry Boyle, the one Irish cop with integrity and a wicked sense of humour – but that only reminds me just how much better he was in IN BRUGES. He is partnered with DON CHEADLE, who is very good as the fish-out-of-water CIA agent – one particular scene has Cheadle conducting house to house enquiries, only to find that nobody speaks English, only Gaelic. He then proceeds to interview a horse in a field. The chemistry between Gleeson and Cheadle is good – but again in IN BRUGES, the chemistry between GLEESON and COLIN FARRELL was terrific. I love the Irish, but what also doesn’t help THE GUARD is the fact that the Irish dialects are so thick, that I had to watch the film twice – the second time with the hard of hearing subtitles option activated, so that I could follow and understand the dialogue. Also, the supporting characters are all Irish stereotypes, only MARK STRONG’s Englishman is truly memorable. The other Irish villains all come over as idiots, (or should that be e-jits?) There are other Irish stereotypes aswell: Guinness, Irish whiskey, folk music, digs about people from Dublin, etc.. At the film’s climax there is a big shootout at some docks, and a big explosion on a boat (which Boyle may, or may not have escaped from). I was expecting THE GUARD to be something special, but instead it’s just another routine cop buddy movie, just set in Ireland. I think IN BRUGES is much better. As the Irish say: “Aw feck!”.- Was this review helpful to you?

good casting
