French director Patrice Leconte has never been a great respecter of political correctness, and this eccentric comedy sees him at his most dubious. If you can overcome his attitude to both women and Arabic culture then there are some utterly charming moments, as the wonderful Jean Rochefort delights in the delicate hands of hairdresser Anna Galiena. The scenes of a seaside childhood and the sudden tragic twist remain longest in the mind, along with Rochefort's marvellously impish performance. But Leconte's camera lingers on Galiena with a lecherous lens that is far removed from the sympathetic gaze of the title character in his previous film, Monsieur Hire.

    Brilliant

This film is the best French Film I know. It appeals mainly to men by pulling on their adolescent dreams of visiting hairdressers playing out their fantasies with one :-)

Some bizarre layers of artistic artifact permeat the screen as you are projected through the film. Some interesting lighting scenes in the Hairdressers salon provide an enjoyable view of a hairdresser nympho that has an interesting ending!!

    Must see.....

If you like Amelie, you'll love this

This is the story of a boy whose sexual awakening begins when he falls in love with a buxom hairdresser and decides that when he grows up he wants to be a hairdresser's husband.

The story is beautifully unravelled. It is funny and sexy, tragic and joyous. You are taken on a journey that has no firm starting point and no final destination. When you meet characters, it's not because they are vital to the plot, but because they are interesting characters. You enjoy them and they leave. God, I love French cinema!

Jean Rochefort is a wonderful actor. His unique arabic dancing is alone worth renting this dvd for. How many actors can make you laugh and cry at the same time?

    Mesmerising Movie

Totally entrancing movie about loneliness, love and loss. Obsession at its best! Fabulous and strange, as dancing becomes a form of expression in this bizarre and beautiful classic french cinema! Fantastic!

    A Gem

This is one movie that touched me in a way that few have before. It's not an action-packed film and there's little drama or tension, but it's just charming and glorious and moving and it affirms love and reminds me of how tremendous it is to be loved.

    Hauntingly poetic

I'm not sure if you would either love or loathe this film, personally I loved it. It is very french, so that might give you a clue which category you would fit into!

Overall, the nostalgic feel, its comic touches, not your typical Hollywood ending and some funky Arabic music thrown in, makes this for me a wonderful film.

    Sentimental and funny

I really liked this film. It was totally the opposite of a US Blockbuster; the characters were beautifully constructed and played. A mixture of fetish and obsession leading to an unexpected end. I'd love to learn to dance like him.

No idea why I requested this film and after seeing it still no idea. What a waste of electricity!!

    Bizarre

This is the tale of a child with a fetish for having his hair cut (as you do), who grows up to marry a hairdresser (as you would). Much singing, dancing and hair-cutting merriment follows until tragedy strikes... This film is absolutely bizarre but at the same time hilarious, I loved it. (NB in French, English subtitles).

    A tad too slow

I watched this because I loved the lead actor in 'L'Homme du Train'. He was great in this too, as were the rest of the cast, but ultimately it just got a bit too slow and my wife noticed me looking around the room to see if anything more exciting was happening on the bookshelves.

It felt like a nice short story that had not had anything very cinematic added to it to make it worth watching instead of reading. Some lovely touches of humour though, especially at the beginning, and worth seeing if you have a decent tolerance of arthouse langour.

    Strangely beautiful!

I loved this film. It is only short but I was transfixed by it. The two characters are so wrapped up in each other and their life together so insular that this makes the ending all the more tragic.
