    The Happening

    • 11 Jun 2008

M Night Shyamalan is drawn to the supernatural like a moth to a light. So when a bunch of high school biology students kick around theories for the unexplained disappearance of tens of thousands of honey bees in the last couple of years, it's no surprise that the hypothesis their teacher, Mr Moore (Mark Wahlberg) likes best is that this is a natural event we will probably never fully understand. Let that be a lesson to us all, because while audiences will probably spend a good deal of the trim Read more

Incredible Hulk hits the top spot

The Incredible Hulk has reached the top of the US box office charts after its first weekend on release. Ed Norton plays scientist Bruce Banner in the sequel to Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk movie, with his character scouring Brazil for an antidote to the gamma poisoning which causes his transformation, some five years after the events in the original film. The movie took a whopping £54 million (£27.9 million) in its opening weekend, knocking last week's number one Kung Fu Panda into second... Read more

The Day the Earth Stood Still

    • 10 Dec 2008

Hard to believe it’s half a century since Michael Rennie came down to earth and threatened to blow us all up unless we stopped threatening to blow each other up. The Cold War nightmare that fuelled a hundred sci-fi classics in the 1950s has subsided for the moment. How would you set about recreating such a stern sermon in a meaningful way today? The remake leaves us wondering for a while. For a start, it has a surprising opening: a bearded and furry Keanu Reeves mountaineering, in India, Read more

3rd Rock From The Sun and 10 Things I Hate About You star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is to turn on the charms for Elf and Almost Famous star Zooey Dechanel in a new offbeat romantic comedy, 500 Days Of Summer, it has been revealed. Showbiz newspaper Variety reports that the pair will headline the non-rom-com, with Gordon-Levitt playing a man who falls head-over-heels in love with Dechanel's character, who unfortunately for him does not believe in all that mumbo-jumbo. They will be joined by a cast... Read more

    The Mist

    • 01 Jul 2008

It’s a strange kettle of fish when the latest film from the beloved Shawshank Redemption team of writer-director Frank Darabont and original author Stephen King is left languishing on the shelf for six months, then released against a couple of blockbusters. Such is the fate of The Mist, a rather anti-summer movie, and not only because of the weather. Reviews in the States last year were scarcely engaged and business was poor. Yet this doomsday horror movie emerges as one of the better... Read more
