Shocking... Raw... Gripping
What a load of self indulgent, just out of film school nonsense. Asia Argento, daughter of famous horror director Dario Argento directs and acts in what can only by viewed as a vanity project. She can't act and relies on teasing the audience with sick shock tactics and a barebones script. The story (as such) revolves around a wayward, negligent teenage mother who manages to get her unwanted child back from his loving foster parents only to abuse him. It's downhill from there on. The film meanders like a drunkenly to a limp conclusion of surrealist improv. The actors looks confused and no wonder.
Though not having read the widely acclaimed book, I was so hopeful for this film. Unfortunately the film is dire. You follow Jeremiah, who is dragged along by his drugged-out mother, and encounters nothing but every kind of abuse along the way. There are several cameos, Marilyn Manson and Peter Fonda being just two, but none of these people detract from the fact that this is a bleak film that goes nowhere. Arty camera shots and effects add nothing, I found it totally unmoving. I think you even stop feeling any sorrow for the poor little boy who was yanked from a potentially happy life in foster care to an abusive existence on the road.
