A very good film indeed --- and very highly recommended
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 06 Oct 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
An excellent period melodrama with high production values and wonderful acting from the always reliable and lovely Olivia de Havilland and the great Ralph Richardson. I personally believe that Montgomery Clift, as the lead male role, is miscast in this particular film --- his modern hairstyle and 'non-period' accent are just 2 examples of aspects which seem out of place in this film.
Wonderful costumes and sets (which are often so essential in a period drama based on a stage play) --- it is a pity that their full impact is masked to some extent by the black and white photography: I cannot understand why colour was not used other than the poor choices often made by this distribution company.
This film is noteable for showing a screen icon, the last surviving lead cast member of 'Gone With The Wind', showing why she won 2 Best Actress Oscars as well as charming us with her wonderfully enjoyable screen parnership with Errol Flynn.
A thoroughly enjoyable and excellent film, especially for viewers of this sort of tear-jerker drama genre.

Engrossing drama based on a short novel by Henry James
By CarlHalling (12 reviews) from Greater London Urban Area , 10 Apr 2012William Wyler's engrossing drama 'The Heiress' has as its origins a play with the same name by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, which they based on Henry James' 'Washington Square', itself allegedly based on a true story told to James. It features Montgomery Clift as a penniless young man whose chief assets are his considerable handsomeness and charm; Olivia de Havilland as the sweet-natured daughter of a doctor resident in New York's Washington Square some time in the 19th century; and Ralph Richardson as the doctor himself. Yet while the novel ended on a quiescent note, both play and movie most decidedly don't...indeed, the climax is chillingly memorable.- Was this review helpful to you?

Superbly Crafted "Heiress"
By a customer , 17 Sep 2011Set in 1840s New York, 'The Heiress' tells the story of shy, naive 'plain Jane' heiress Catherine Sloper (Olivia de Havilland, in a magnificently sympathetic Oscar winning performance) who attracts the attentions of a charming but unscrupulous fortune hunter (Montgomery Clift). Her father's suspicions of the young man's motives lead to a bitter clash with Catherine, as long buried resentments are forced out into the open.
The action of the film takes place for the most part within the confines of the Sloper family home in Washington Square, and shows the film's origins in the play of the same name. Would be viewers should not fear, however, that the film is therefore 'stagey' or inclined to plod. On the contrary, William Wyler's mastery direction ratchets up the tension to simmering levels, as his impeccable cast makes the most of a script that fairly crackles. This was Hollywood 'golden age' film-making at its best; 'The Heiress' stands as a superbly crafted piece of work, and a not-to-be-missed treat.- Was this review helpful to you?
