James Yang inherits a mansion from unknown relatives and moves in with his fiancée, Yo, but they soon realize that the house has a grisly past: 20 years ago, an entire family hanged themselves from the rafters. Soon, eerie events and ghostly visions begin to occur--and then Yang's friend Cheng winds up dead, with a ghastly mark on his neck. Yo becomes committed to finding the macabre secret of the house and the Yang family, and discovers from a lunatic aunt that the family has a dark legacy--one that Yang might be doomed to repeat. In 2005, the creepiest and most stylish horror movies hailed from Asia, and this ghastly gem shows why: unlike the slash-a-second splatterfest of American fare, the new Asian horror seems content to let the unsaid and unseen slowly crescendo into something truly terrifying.

"It matches films like The Sixth Sense and A Tale Of Two Sisters... a step ahead of the competition... the film is a knockout"
"Taiwanese scarefest The Heirloom could kick-start a whole new subdivision of Asian psychodramas"
I didnt find this film scary at all. The storyline was c*** and the acting was absolutly ridiculous.
I'm a huge fan of Asian horror, and managed to catch quite a lot of smaller productions while I was out there, as well as more commercial stuff such as Eye 2. So yeah, you can probably call me a horror nerd. I picked this up hoping it would have some good scares and an engrossing plot, but I was left disappinted and really can't recommend it.
The biggest complaint is that it simply copies a slew of other horror films, all of which were scarier, creepier and overall better produced. Elements of Ju-On, One Missed Call, Shutter, Phone, Dumplings and many others can all be found here - the creepy house, the freaky images appearing in TV's and on phones, a family with a dark secret, the list goes on. It's all staler than a corner shop baguette, and about as scary as catching sight of Jade Goody in a swimsuit.
On top of this, the direction and acting, in a word, suck. In two words, suck hard. Normally I can't tell if acting is any good in an Asian film as I'm just trying to keep up with the subtitles, but man, it was bad. At noticing that their friend has magically appeared in their attic for the fourth time, they react with all the surprise and horror of discovering that they went out and forgot to set the video for Corrie. Just avoid this please, it's a waste of a rental.
