This modern-day remake of horror classic The Hills Have Eyes kicks off with a brief but brutal pre-title massacre... read more on Time Out
Directed in tense, concentrated jabs...the remake establishes a jittery family dynamic as well as the original
A seriously powerful horror, thrill-ride with guts, gore and bloodshed
I just saw this in the cinema, and I am disturbed by the efforts directors will go to shock people. This is a very sick movie, and I am not shocked easily.
Horror films are not scary anymore... they have become gory, and violent to an extent that the next film has to be even worse than the last.
Whatever happened to films like The Shining, or Carrie. Sure, they had violent and gory moments but they also played on your mind and made you think.
Feeling sick and shaking your head in total disbelief is not entertainment.
After the first few minutes, I fast forwarded through this film and, as I suspected it had all the ingredients from the classic films such as Deliverance and the first Halloween film. They did it first and did it better:
Unfriendly, hostile local people in remote area with a grudge against slick city incomers, nubile/handsome character..... blood, slash, murder suspense, murder sex, murder survival/shooting, spurt spurt, suspenseful music...that's about it I think.....enjoy
The Hills Have Eyes starts off with a family going on vacation. A dubious petrol station attendant gives them directions of a short cut he knows that'll cut the trip in half. This is where it all goes wrong. Soon after this, the carnage starts.
Once it does, it doesnt let up for the duration. The original confrontation between 'good' and 'evil' is so intense I don't know if I even took a breath. The plot, is very typical of this genre, but what make this such a good film is the shockingly extreme violence and gore. This movie is savage, brutal, but also very moving. This is due to an excellent cast, magnificent special effects and creative directing.
I recommend this movie to those who aren't afraid of blood or mutants. This movie I guarantee will have you scared out of your wits.
'Hills' made my lass leave the room.
Some of the scenes are brutal but not overly excessive...in my opinion.
This is a conventional horror movie but you cannot deny that Craven has achieved a good quality remake.
What a wasted opportunity to update a classic horror film. I was so bored watching this, it had just about every lame assed done before so much better cliche in it.
The characters you're supposed to be scared for are a bunch of whiny unlikable tossers, if they weren't to be killed anyway I would of been tempted to off them myself if I'd been there with them. The only character you actually have any sympathy for was the dog (2nd one btw), it had a damn sight more intelligence than the rest put together, but not enough to tell it's agent to make sure it get's better scripts to read next time.
The whole idea is an excellent premise to hang a good story round, the wasted potential is what really p****d me off. See the original instead, much better.

Isn't the whole point of watching a horro movie, to be..well.. shocked? Forget the negative poncy reviews. If you like horror, edge of your seat tension, gore and a plausible scary story then you have it all here. I loved the original back in 1978 (one of my top 5 all time films) and the remake is superb. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen, for die hard, horror and thrill fans only - it delivers, big time!!
Finally a remake thats worth watching, this version, comes a long way from the 70's horror, and as a meeting of minds the old and the new Wes craven's version and Alexandre Aja's,switchblade romance)version offers up more in the way of gruesome gore and pushing the limit's but only slightly pushing them, after watching haute tension,it feels like he was held back from going all out,and the survivors to be characters could have been more fuller, but very tense, very violent and gruesome, not a date movie but well worth watching, and part of a wave of horror movies which are testing the limits of the audience,Switchblade Romance,Wolf creek,Hostel, etc
Firstly this film is not for the fain-hearted. The tension is cranked up a few notches with by Alexandre Arja (do check out his switchblade romance).
I would like to score this film higher to a 6 but I didn't love it, mainly because it was truly horrific. (In a good way)
The film is very harrowing especially once the trailer is attacked. The cast are excellent and you do feel for the characters.
All in all a creditable remake with some new touches.
If you like watch true horror then this is the film for you much better than the likes of the tame 'House of wax' etc.
Remember they're watching.....
Do we need to see a woman sexually molested whilst a gun is held to her babies head to enjoy a scary movie?
I don't think so!!
The plot wasn't doing much, then when It got really nasty I had to stop watching, something I never do!!!!
Sexual violence is a real no no for me, I still can't get the sick bits out of my head!
I would not recomend this film ever! This is the sort of film that shouldn't be made,
as it helps make sicko's.
Horror, but at the expence of all taste and decency.
A good horror all round, although more thought has been put into gruesome deaths than storyline and character development.
If it wasn't so new it would be a classic, but it fails to really push the genre in any new directions. Having said that, I was seriously gnarled and harrowed by the end of the film. This is quite a hard core blood-bath for twisted horror fans.
Not stupid enough to be a no-brainer, not smart enough ultimately to challenge, but if gore and horror with a classic (i.e. semi-predictable) outcome are all youre after 'The Hills Have Eyes' does not disappoint.
Lets get one thing straight here. I love horror films. Theres nothing I like better than having the bejesus scared out of me by a good scary flick. Scares are thin on the ground here, just buckets of gore, but if you like your gore then you've got it. However, I cannot give this film a good review
One scene in particular in this film made me very angry indeed. If you've seen it you will know which one. Its the one where (a) a woman is raped by a mutant followed by (b) the molesting of her sister whilst a gun is held to her babys head before (c) the mother is shot in the head.
The scene is unecessary, vulgar and actually quite sickening. I'm amazed that the BBFC actually passed this. If this film had been made twenty years ago it wouldn't have got a general release.
A shame, because there are some great special effects and action sequences here, but for that scene alone I think that the director, Wes Craven, and basically anyone associated with the film should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
Avoid. Unless you enjoy watching this sort of thing. In which case, get help.
I love a good old gore-fest. This was it. Had everything for me, except zombies... Sure, it's gory, but I wouldn't say any of it is unnecessary and neither would I say that it is gratuitous. You all know the basic story, you all know it's going to be violent and graphic. If you're easily shocked, don't watch it. If you're not squeemish, then enjoy it. I'd highly recommend this to anyone.
