No, really. I half expected the hero to be galloping amongst the roofs, not just jumping around them with a cat!!

Seriously though, if you've read the book it's probably a great deal more enjoyable. As it is, 20 minutes in I still had no idea who the hero was other than that he was an Italian speaker and his would-be assasins were German speakers. And then he just seemed to run from one lynch mob to another in the same town, which also had a religious procession on (sounds more like a huge city). When he met up with Juliette Binoche you have no idea who she was, who the people she met up with were, the significance of the places they mentioned and there was no hint of any romantic interest until the final 10 minutes.

I so desperately wanted to like this film as I've waited so long for it, but I found myself on the edge of falling asleep so many times when they ran the same dialogue over and over and over again at their latest place of refuge. It seems to reward viewers for sitting through the tedium with La Binonche's naked form in the final reel - and by the way if the rubbing method never saved anyone before why did it work on her? is it simply because she's the most gorgeous?

The performances were great, it's just the story-telling that is terrible. The title suggested swash-buckling in the mode of Le Bossu, but it feels more like 1 pretty person on horseback joined later by another pretty person on horseback (neither of whom I cared much about), with a bit of titillation thrown in!

A good adventure, although a little hard to follow the plot at the start.

I loved this film when I first saw it about 14yrs ago. I fell in love with the whole feel and the way it was shot. The characters and story intrigued me and I just had to watch it again after all these years to see if it still stood up, for me it did. I now want a copy to buy.

  • Rambling Rubbish

I was recommended this film by a friend, so as we sat down , as a family to watch, we had high hopes.

The beginning was full of swash buckling daring do, only to descend into rambling rubbish. The cholera epidemic was at first unpleasant, then became tedious as the body count mounted. The meetinjg up with the Binoche character took way too long to happen and then the holes in the plot really mounted. (Her fear of the crow was hilarious, the contived scene gave us much merriment) After an hour and a half of this tosh, we were both revolted and bored.

The ending was a total disgrace, the film was wrapped up in a matter of minutes, we wuz robbed!

What to say? They weren't even Juliette's breasts. At least from the looks of things, especially the long legs and slim torso. A body double i guess. Could be wrong of course, in which case i would change the star rating to a one not a Zero. It is a shame though that that particular scene came rather late in the film, long after i had started fast forwarding large tracts to get to the end without missing anything worthwhile. A strategy that paid off, body double or no. The last few sentences of the film were rather nice in a very conventional and unoriginal way. Yes, OK, i suppose it is supposed to be some kind of parable. But still, a parable doesn't have to be boring even it does to some extent have to be unoriginal. So there we have it... this film is some kind of a parable, in the way of a Candide kind of hero (there is probably a more exact comparison). Honest, Honourable, brave, innocent etc. Yes and there's a love interest. All done in the main very tediously. Another huge waste of money that could have been spent making a good film. Who do these people know to get the chance to make these donkeys?

    Don't watch it.
