More like Catman on the roofBy a customer from London , 02 Apr 2006
[Highly rated reviewer]No, really. I half expected the hero to be galloping amongst the roofs, not just jumping around them with a cat!!
Seriously though, if you've read the book it's probably a great deal more enjoyable. As it is, 20 minutes in I still had no idea who the hero was other than that he was an Italian speaker and his would-be assasins were German speakers. And then he just seemed to run from one lynch mob to another in the same town, which also had a religious procession on (sounds more like a huge city). When he met up with Juliette Binoche you have no idea who she was, who the people she met up with were, the significance of the places they mentioned and there was no hint of any romantic interest until the final 10 minutes.
I so desperately wanted to like this film as I've waited so long for it, but I found myself on the edge of falling asleep so many times when they ran the same dialogue over and over and over again at their latest place of refuge. It seems to reward viewers for sitting through the tedium with La Binonche's naked form in the final reel - and by the way if the rubbing method never saved anyone before why did it work on her? is it simply because she's the most gorgeous?
The performances were great, it's just the story-telling that is terrible. The title suggested swash-buckling in the mode of Le Bossu, but it feels more like 1 pretty person on horseback joined later by another pretty person on horseback (neither of whom I cared much about), with a bit of titillation thrown in!

boredBy a customer from Tunbridge Wells , 20 Jan 20092 very good actors in a pantomime like script
The Horseman on the RoofBy a customer from Newtonmore , 30 Dec 2008Good film, very atmospheric and quite funny in parts (the kitty on the roof almost stole the show). Juliette Binoche was very slow at making an appearance but when she did the film became much more intersting...worth a look.
Beautiful but a little repetitiveBy firko (41 reviews) from Worcester , 25 Jun 2008A kind of horseback road movie, Horseman on the Roof takes us through France while a cholera epidemic sweeps the country. Our robust hero manages to travel through both unaffected and affected areas, encountering fear, desperation and angry mobs, as well as aristos along the way.
With stunning visuals and strong central performances, there is a lot going for this movie. Towards the later stages the journey gets somewhat confused though, and the motivations of the central character are never really explored. Recommended though, if only to prove that Olivier Martinez is more than just a pretty (handsome) face.
Olivier phew!By a customer from Bonnie Scotland , 20 Jun 2008I really enjoyed this film and was quite impressed with Olivier Martinez. Apart from obvious reasons (!) he was actually very good and played the part tp perfection. Initially I found it hard not to laugh as everyone was talking so fast but that was the style in that period. Very good film, lots of passion and drama. Worth renting...
dont you just hate it when...By lifeinboxes (3 reviews) from Brighton , 26 Mar 2008....the film goes along in one of those eternally slow paces, which unusually was quite appropriate, and then ends as if the whole film company just got called home on an emergency!!! Sorry- but the appauling 'blink and you'll miss it' ending REALLY spoilt the film and made me really cross! It DESERVED a slower and more involved ending.
If the ending had been given the same attention as the rest of the film, it would have been an excellent contribution to the industry. As it is, I am not sure if I should recommend it for you to watch or not really!
