In Ronald Neame's film of Joyce Cary's classic novel, Alec Guinness transforms himself into one of cinema's most indelible comic figures: the somewhat vulgar but dedicated painter in search of his artistic vision, Gulley Jimson. As the ill-behaved Jimson searches for a perfect canvas, he determines to let nothing come between himself and the realization of his exalted vision. A perceptive examination of the struggle of artistic creation, The Horse's Mouth is also Neame's comic masterpiece.

Because you might discover that you have found something that you never bargained for.
This movie from 1958 is unique. Is it a comedy ? In parts maybe. Is it a drame ? in parts maybe. Is it art ? Well that depends upon your point of view.
My frame of focus for this movie is my interest in the retro period of the 1960's. I can relate to the Bohemian lifestyle of Jimpson and his apparent manic and bizarre behaviour. I can also relate to his mischievous and borderline criminal behaviour. Artists did behave like that, and probably still do on another more well financed plain.
The film is of its time therefore. To anticipate what is in store, think Orton meets Hancock. Revel in Alec Guiness's wonderful acting and enjoy the music score based on Lt Kije Suite by Prokoviev.
