You probably won't find anyone with a kind word for this garbage. It is rubbish, but like all Fulci movies, it's a bit like a car accident you can't quite resist slowing down to look at, only to feel completely sick when you do. After all, the master of spaghetti gore gives you all of Italian Horror Cinema's most popular wares - ghastly penetrative violence, horrendous dubbing, a totally inappropriate disco soundtrack and an almost pathological obsession with decay and blood, plus lots of close-ups of wounds and severed heads for connoisseurs. It doesn't even try to make sense. For example, why does the saucy babysitter clean up after the zombie cellar tenant, and how long did it take her to perfect the bizarre snarl she gives the hero when she is trying to open the cellar? And most of all, if the killer is so slow-moving, how come none of his victims manages to get away from him? No matter how fun bad movies sound in the abstract, ten minutes of this will cure you. It's just bad.

The House by the Cemetery is a classic. Apparently. Now, let me start by saying that I’m a big fan of ‘so bad they’re good’ movies. Normally, these are horror films, preferably made in the seventies and eighties (think Dario Agento’s Demons 1 and 2). So, I like to think I approached The House by the Cemetery in the right frame of mind. I knew it would be old fashioned. I knew it would be dubbed and I knew it would have pretty awful dialogue. Yet still I failed to see what all the hype was about. Yes, it scores points for being nicely gory, but that’s about it. Currently, we movie-buffs like to pour scorn on Hollywood’s obsession with remaking every vaguely famous film from yesteryear. However, in my opinion, this is one film that’s crying out for a remake. It was too old fashioned, even for me. I know this is really trivial, but I just couldn’t bring myself to get past the incredibly bad haircuts, fashion sense and seriously awful dubbing to actually enjoy this film. I know I should have been able to look past that, but I couldn’t. About the scariest thing about this film is the main child. He’s seriously weird-looking and, not only that, but they chose to dub his voice with that of an adult trying to sound like a child. It only made it weirder. Too many beards. Too little action. If anyone can please explain to me what I’m missing, drop me a line. I would give it one star, but the levels of gore (and scene with the bat on a string which made me laugh), I’ll up the overall mark to two.

Oh my God awful. Please spare yourself the pain. Was bored after the first scene and stopped watching before the end. Didn't care what happened to the characters.

  • A little gem!

Lucio Fulci was a genius! This is not his best film but compared to the recent crop of torture porn and pointless and forgetful horror remakes, this little gem is vastly superior in every respect. It has loads of atmosphere, (helped by a great sound track) and an almost surreal feel - like THE BEYOND and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD it is thin on plot but comes across as something that nightmares are made of. Ignore other reviewers and give it a chance!

  • B for bad

This has to be one of the worse films I have ever seen. The acting was so wooden & effects so awful it gave B movies a great name.

There was no tension, no fear & the storyline was practically non existent even the music was awful.

Anyonewho doesn't know what they're getting from a film called 'The House By The Cemetery' deserves to be disappointed. Great music. Abominable acting, dialogue and plot. Hilarious gore ( the scene with the bat is priceless) and the most neglected and inappropriately named child in horror film history. Should have the alternative title 'Who's In The Cellar Now ?'.
