Misses the mark

This flim tries hard to make likable characters and have quirky scissorhandesque scenes, but just doesn't quite get there.
The characters are not endearing enough or particularly interesting and there are some scenes which try to be humourously over the top arty, where I just found myself fast-forwarding out of irritation (such as the lift operator dragging himself across the carpet after being fired, and the angel desdending as time is stood still).
Part of the problem is Tim Robbins I think, I just don't feel he makes contact with an audience. Jennifer Jason leigh adopts an irritating and unconvincing accent also.
It just does not reach any depth of feeling.- Was this review helpful to you?

(49)Who is this film for?
By pablohoney1981 (11 reviews) from Chesterfield , 09 Sep 2011Perhaps this is just a Coen brothers things, because my partner has just listed several other Coen brother films, all of which I hate, but I found this movie excruciating to watch. Can't really remember why I wanted to watch this in the first place, but I found myself asking who this film was for? 'Y'know, for kids?'. Each character seemed deliberately farcical in the style of a spoof movie, all horrendously unlikeable, and hideously and deliberately over-acted. I can imagine the director in the corner shouting 'Quirkier! More kookiness!' It was almost like I was watching a kids movie like Mouse Trap or Dunstan Checks In (or whatever it is) but it was clearly not supposed to be. Shall actively screen out all Coen brothers films in future. Unless you know you like the style of these guys, you'll probably hate this film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Clever, entertaining and nicely stylized. It's a modern classic.
By Mike_P (1 review) , 12 Aug 2011Clever, entertaining and nicely stylized. It's a modern classic. Tim Robbins is a natural imbecile and Paul Newman plays great a '50's corporate shark.- Was this review helpful to you?

A minor Cohen brothers film
By Daniel Pollard from Manchester, England , 25 Mar 2011Its strange that the Cohen brothers homage to the warm and compassionate films of Frank Cappra has no heart, soul or humanity. The 1950s New York is beautifully recreated , but I had the feeling of a lack of substance and an over emphasis on style. Tim Robbins as the bungling chief executive is nowhere near likeable or charismatic enough to carry the film, hes definitely no George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart). On the other hand, Jennifer Jason Leigh is amazing as the quick witted, hard edged, Katherine Hepburn type career girl. Its an ok watch, but it seems the Cohens have really missed the point and passed up an excellent opportunity.- Was this review helpful to you?
