I am a huge Walt Disney fan and have seen mostly all the films. this was released when i was little and is really a great movie. based on the story by Victor Hugo. the film starts with a young gypsy mother with a baby in a bundle who is raised by an evil Judge named Claude Frollo. the child is given a cruel name which means ' half formed' and that name is Quasimodo{Tom Hulce- Amadeus}and the tale is really moving. basically the film sees how Qausimodo is locked from everyone else in Paris within the Notre Damne Cathedral's bell tower because Frollo believes he will scare everyone off{it would also ruin Frollo's reputation.} meanwhile there is this gypsy girl named Esmerelda{ Demi Moore} who is the only person who really is sincerely kind to Quasimodo. then we have Frollo's knight Phoebus{Kevin Kline} who's named after Phoebus Apollo in Greek myth. the film sees Phoebus fall in love with Esemerelda. Esmerelda isn't fond of Phoebus but becomes his friend in time. Quasimodo also has some gargoyle friends named after the book's author: Victor & Hugo are joined by a third gargoyle named Leverne, she is funny. Hugo is hilarious. great songs. great story. why not see it today? you won't be dissapointed!

  • Beautiful animation with beautiful soundtrack

I have to start by saying that I absolutely loved the song 'God save the outcasts'! Such a beautiful song and the soundtrack as a whole is amazing - which I didn't know prior to watching this. The animation is stunningly beautiful and entertaining. The storyline is great and engaging. Good for adults and kids.

This is dark disney at its best. On the surface it appears to be just about evil Frollo keeping Quasimodo in the bell tower, but behind the story comes through how Frollo truly believes he is acting in the interest of the Lord, not only this but it explores the acceptance of the disabled in Notre Dame. I watched this years ago as a youngster and missed these hidden depths, but now watching it from an adults perspective it has far more to offer than just a usual animation.

An interesting choice of an adaption source for Disney, this. With a story centred around human refusal to accept the different, and with a surprisingly dark villain, at first glance the film might seem a bit 'adult' to fit on the Disney shelf. However, the tone remains relatively light throughout, including the brilliantly flippant moment of 'Paris, the city of lovers/Is glowing this evening/True, that's because it's on fire...'.

In terms of characterisation, the film doesn't match up to the other rich characters of the Disneyverse. Quasimodo is sweet and righteous, Esmerelda is feisty and righteous, Pheobus is witty and righteous, the gargoyles are sketched-in archetypes (brash, well-spoken and... old lady) and Frollo is evil. Just evil. Why does he want to kill Quasimodo as a child? Because he's evil. Why keep him hidden away all his life? Just because he's evil. Why exterminate the Gypsy inhabitants of Paris and condemn the joyful Festival of Fools? (You're a mean one, Mr Frollo.) Whilst voiced excellently by Tony Jay, Frollo's character, like them all, is never explored in any depth. Quasimodo gets the closest, being the protagonist, but his portrayal as a generic Disney 'hero', along the same lines of (adult) Simba, doesn't quite makes for fascinating viewing. The film feels quite rushed, and as you watch you have a feeling that, were a couple of more rambling songs cut out (such as 'God Help The Outcasts', or, despite containing the glorious line quoted above, 'A Guy Like You') space might have been made for more interesting characterisation.

The animation, as expected from a 90's Disney, is stunning, and the period architecture looks magnificent. However, it seems this is the only thing in the film that stands out amongst its siblings.

Disney doing what it does absolutely best. Outcasts reconciled, bad guys with their just deserts. And everybody getting a good song.
