Wrong version
By a customer from Southampton , 08 Jan 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Be careful ordering the Laughton Hunchback. I did and got sent the 20's silent version with Lon Chaney instead. Very impressive sets but rather trying over two hours despite some of the funniest costumes and make-up I've ever seen - imagine Peter Beardsley with a tight black perm.- Was this review helpful to you?

(8)Wonderful Laughton
By a customer , 05 Jul 20111939 was quite a year for Hollywood; 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington', 'Gunga Din', 'Stagecoach', 'Dark Victory', 'Wizard of Oz', 'Gone With The Wind', and this magnificent, darkly romantic adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel.
Maureen O'Hara captivates as Esmerelda, Cedric Hardwicke glowers villanously, Thomas Mitchell brings some light relief to proceedings, but the performance of Charles Laughton, as the hunchback Quasimodo, is simply heartbreaking.
They don't make them like this anymore. Really.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)
By vincehandley (1 review) from Glasgow , 02 May 2009I can't review the 1939 version of 'Hunchback' because I was sent Lon Chaney's 1923 version. Does Lovefilm actually have Laughton's 1939 version? Quite a few others have experienced the same problem. Chaney's performance notwithstanding, Laughton is the definitive Quasimodo. Lovefilm subscribers should have a chance to experience it.- Was this review helpful to you?
