The hunger games lightBy cloudmanwalker (31 reviews) from London , 31 Mar 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]Ok first of all I am glad this film was made because I would never have been interested in the books without seeing the trailer. I read all three in a week, not much on at the moment, and I thought it was an excellent series. I could not wait to see the movie and as soon as it was released I went straight to my local cinema full of eager anticipation. The build up to the games was quite true to the book however once Katlin went up the tube the whole film became one major dissapointment. The book was violent with some very disturbing scenes, I did not feel it was a teenage book at all. The film makers obviously chose to target teenagers and glossed over the violence and made it 'twilighty', read the book and you will see what I mean. The scene where Kato gets gnawed at by the muts, he was wearing chainmail so they only get to his hands and feet, was completely glossed over. The reason our two heroes survived was because they pretended to be in love and got the support of sponsors and the public. There are whole sections of the book which were not explored very well at all. Anyway had the film makers decided to make a movie for adults, such as Battle Royale, the condemned and arena this could have been a cult classic. What we have instead is a money making teenage franchise in the twilight vein. A wasted opportunity to make a statement about the corrupt concept of globalisation, which the book achieved so successfuly. Do yourselves a favour and read the books instead, you will not forget them I promise, which is so much more than can be said for this mediocre effort.

It would be difficult to say I enjoyed this considering the context.By RononJac (2 reviews) , 03 Dec 2013I have heard that the books are better than this first instalment. However Movies are my medium and so I never like to read a book before I've seen the Movie. Unfortunately the films of books rarely live up to the original and are sometimes hollow shells of the master text. I can see that this is again probably the case without even needing to read them. I get a sense of what the writer was commenting on but the execution of this film isn't as good as it could be. I found myself in a strange mental paradox while watching. There are clearly other elements that run through the story but one main one is a story about a civilisation centred around a government run forced death match. The population get together and watch an entertainment show about young kids killing each other for the prize of a better life and this is on television. I found myself passing judgement over this rather sick display, then realising I was watching a film (a product meant to entertain) about kids killing each other. In a way I found myself judging myself.

Want it on instantBy jacquelinepurple (1 review) , 29 Nov 2013Amazing film want to be able to watch it on instant though because I don't have the DVD package. Want to see this film as it is my favourite
No teen movieBy Pete6h (7 reviews) , 20 Nov 2013Someone described this film as a cute teen movie. If this is a cute teen movie then Kill Bill must be a chic flic. I am a 61 year old bloke and I love both of these films. My wife, two children and a grand child all think it is a wonderful film superbly acted. I can only think his someone didn't actually see the film.
