I'll start by getting straight down to brass taxes. I didnt dislike this film. I didnt love it, but iv seen alot worse this year already (no names mentioned #Ahem: Vantage point#)
The budget wasnt especially high but the story itself is interesting enough without it, more so as its mostly true (Great caption at the start which says 'only the most outrageous parts of the story are true'.). Had it not been true i would probably drop another star off it. But on educational purposes alone I would have thought this film would have been ATLEAST cinema worthy. It raises HUGE questions about the UN's role in serbia aswell as applying it to the modern day war on terror. But if that doesnt tickle your pickle then there's a few laughs thrown in along the way (The indian UN officer and the Midget, shellsuit ridden gangster) , and also Gere is as reliable as ever to pull you into the story.
The that fact that it was more or less straight to DVD is hardly a ringing endorsement for any film, but dont let that put you off. It does try to be a bit 'in bruges' with its dark humour yet very rarely pulls it off. But if you've exhausted all your top titles for the month, and you fancy a film that will have you thinking for a while after it's finished, then you should go for it. (probably)
It has been a while since we have seen Mr Gere grace our screen and pleasingly his come back was a decent one, this movie is far from perfect but fills an evening well. The story is based on true events and follows a former top reporter who looks to save his career by tracking down the most wanted criminal in the world deep in the heart of Bosnia. This plot sounds fantastic, but do not get too excited, its good but not that good! Gere is believable as the all action journalist and the general standard of acting is decent, together with a good mixture of film styles it is not too difficult to enjoy. The Hunting Party contains elements of drama, grit, a little humour and plenty of action and despite drifting in a few places kept us very entertained. The light hearted elements, together with an up to date sound track in place reminded me of the movie Three Kings cross that a gritty true life drama and a quirky action movie and you are close to the mark. A few cheesy moments aside this is not bad. 7/10. 4 Stars.
