Thirty-three years after In the Heat of the Night, veteran director Norman Jewison tackles bigotry and prejudice again in this true story of racial injustice. Oscar nominee Denzel Washington stars as Rubin Hurricane Carter, the boxer who was framed for three murders and sentenced to three life terms. Bob Dylan wrote a song about the case and countless petitions were organised on his behalf., but it took a teenage boy named Lesra Martin (Vicellous Reon Shannon) to liberate Carter after 19 years of wrongful imprisonment. Washington initially makes Carter a prickly, uncooperative character, but his gradual progression from hate-filled loner to dignified role model packs a powerful punch.
Washington's performance helps lift this often plodding biopic out of the ordinary, but its clumsy construction diminishes its impact.
"...Washington delivers a soaring, intense performance, arguably the richest in his impressive career..."
If you ever wondered why Denzel won his best actor Oscar for 'Training Day' which was essentially a bad film, watch this. If you add his performances in 'Cry Freedom' (for example) to this film, you'll realise why Hollywood rectified a long-standing mistake.
From the subject matter of this film, it might sound like a story you've seen many times before. But don't be put off - Denzel Washington's powerful performance carries this film onto another level. You really feel for him as a man who has never been given a chance in life, and has gone past believing that he ever could be.
This is probably one of the best performances by Denzel, this film portrays the life of real life boxer Rueben Carter and how he was framed for murder. A sure fire classic.
When you go to the cinema to see a movie, you want to feel something and learn a few things. Hurricane delivers in all aspects, Denzel Washington deserved an Oscar for this role, the man is an amazing actor.
The movie depicts the life of a promising boxer whose dreams of being world greatest
were foiled due to the hate he felt for being coloured by a top police officer.
This is a must-see movie, it should be in your list of "10 things to do before I die".
Absolutely Brilliant, well written, well acted, enthralling story. Denzil Washington is supberb as Hurricane!

Why didn't Denzel Washington get an Oscar for his magnificent role in this movie? For me, it was far better than his performance in Training Day!

Literally. A story of a sickening injustice and I won't say whether it has a happy ending or not, rent it and find out. Occasionally gets close to over-sentimentality but manages to stave it off and instead delivers a powerful, emotional and engrossing dramatisation of the story of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter. Interesting narrative structure and a brilliant performance from Denzel keep you interested for the considerable length of the movie and there's more than one occasion where the eyes might start getting a bit moist...if you're a sentimental old fool like me that is.
I rented this film with a little apprehension, however this was misguided. Washington puts in yet another sterling performance as the former boxing champion, wrongly convicted of murder. Leave aside your personal feelings on films of this nature & pretend it's not a true story, it is a well made film withsome great acting.
