I'd always known this was supposed to be a classic, but never got around to seeing it until now. Well, who want's to watch a film all about pool? Don't be decieved, the pool is secondary. This is a character study and love story, as Fast Eddie (Newman) goes from being emotionally empty, his brashness and arrogance hiding his insecurities, to an emotional awakening and maturity.

The actors take centre stage, each perfect for their roles, each fleshing out their character in mastery of their craft. Long, slow takes let the charaters fill the screen, every line, every look, every gesture telling of their inner motivations, their outer stories. Scott is brilliant, Newman burns the screen with an understated intensity, whilst Gleason performance is an essay in why, in big screen acting, less is really more - not a wasted movement, not a wasted gesture.

Shot in bleak black and white, and with a sparse downbeat soundtrack, the film perfectly presents the barren landscape of pool dives, bars and cheap lodgings, that is Eddie's life.

Forget if being a 'sports picture'. Although pool scenes are indeed crucial to the film, you don't need to know anything about the game to appretiate their staging and their dramatic power and tension.

This is simply one of the all time great movies.

The black and white perfectly compliments the bleak and dreary settings of the pool halls, where it seems men don't sit around and talk, but stare and watch each other play pool in silence. The pool table is there movie and the players are the actors.

dull, dreary, and depressing. It was not at all what I expected. I lost interest halfway through. Its not really about the pool more about all the characters involved in it....and theyre not that interesting either

This film is great. Some parts felt slow and were hard to get into, but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. A gritty film I won't forget.

Yet again another film that I can't believe I hadn't seen. While I found the whole film entertaining, I found the parts while 'Fast' Eddie was playing pool almost electrifying. So much intensity and power in Newman and Gleeson while the crowd are watching two blokes hit balls round a table with sticks. I was abit but off by the middle of the film but if the whole film was just pool it would have become boring.

It's not until you watch The Hustler again after more than 40 years (as I did) that you realise what a great medium black and white is for a movie and just how good an actor Paul Newman was.

This was an absolute joy to see again and this time round I sensed something of the 'stage play' about the whole thing, in terms of each scene being complete in its own right, whilst still flowing from one into the next to move the story on.

Sheer cinematic magic. I await The Color of Money with interest. Not having seen it first time round, I'll be interested to see how Newman matures the character of Fast Eddy, alongside the (then) new talent presented by Tom Cruise - himself a vastly underrated actor, in my view.
